Several area businesses and business people were recognized in December's Fort Wayne Business Journal's "Year in Review" as being among the the largest and best in northeast Indiana.
Kosciusko Community Hospital was recognized in multiple categories: No. 5 in largest hospitals, based on the number of full-time employees in the 2005 American Hospital Association Guide; No. 5 in total births; and fifth in latest expansion, with the June groundbreaking for The Beyer Building, a 19,600-square-foot addition that will house KCH satellite facilities and Northern Lakes Internal Medicine.
In largest construction projects, based on cost, KCH was recognized for completion of the 24,800-square-foot Emergency Care Center at $8 million. Manchester College's $16.8 million Science Center was one of the largest construction projects in northeast Indiana. Of the 11 projects highlighted, the only other project outside the Fort Wayne area was the new Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.
Two area business people were included in "Power Players of 2005," Dane Miller, president/CEO, Biomet Inc., and Gordon Van Ummersen, vice president of marketing, Depuy Orthopaedics Inc. Power players, defined as "a prominent leader that 'makes things happen' in industry and northeast Indiana by way of authority, influence, determination and sheer will," were selected through a poll, based on nine categories, taken on FWBJ's Web site.
Top real estate agents were selected based upon an exhaustive search of those agents who best exemplified professionalism through sales activity, community involvement and professional development. From the Kosciusko Board of Realtors¨ were: Teresa Bakehorn, RE/MAX Rainbow, Warsaw; Dave Blackwell, The Cole Realty, Warsaw; Joe and Karin Hamilton, Coldwell Banker Hamilton, Warsaw; Amanda and Dan Harstine, Integrity Group, Syracuse; and Shelley Johnson, Lucas REALTORS¨/GMAC, Warsaw.
Based upon population by zip code and median family income in the 2000 Census, one zip code in Kosciusko County ranked in the top 25 Wealthiest Zip Codes in northeast Indiana - Leesburg, 46538, ranked 11th, with 1,208 total families and median family income of $60,250.
Lake City Bank was the only bank headquartered in Kosciusko County listed among the 20 Largest Banks and Credit Unions, ranking 18th. Information was provided by local banks, and in most cases, verified by FDIC. Banks headquartered outside the area with local branches were: Campbell & Fetter, Fifth Third, National City and Wells Fargo.
Kerlin Motor Co., with one location in Silver Lake, was ranked 13th out of the top 15 Largest New and Used Car Dealerships of northeast Indiana, based on 2004 total gross sales of more than $22 million. Of the top 15, Kerlin also had the distinction of being the oldest (started in 1927) and having the fewest local sales people (four). Bart's Car Store, headquartered in Columbia City, ranked second in sales, with $78 million through its nine locations throughout northeast Indiana.
In the top 24 Not-for-Profit Public Charities, four area not-for-profits were listed in the top 39: 13th - Grace College, Winona Lake; 15th - Cardinal Center, Warsaw; 16th - Otis Bowen Center for Human Services, Warsaw; and 39th - Kosciusko County Community Foundation. Ranking was based on minimum financial size of $5 million, as reported to the Internal Revenue Service.
It should be noted that the Kosciusko County area was not ranked in several "Best of" categories. In some cases, such as "Best Docs" and "Largest Physicians Groups," the groups' and physicians' primary offices were in Fort Wayne, however some may have office hours in Warsaw or be affiliated with KCH. In other cases, the source of information dealt only with the Fort Wayne area, such as "Women in Power," as identified by Women's Enterprise, a program of the Fort Wayne Women's Bureau.
In addition to the "Best of FWBJ 2005," Vintage France, Winona Lake, was highlighted as December's "Best Kept Secret," a regular feature in the magazine. The full-page article, by Teri Tucker, managing editor with FWBJ, included background on Vintage France's owner, Michel Allueva, and information on the cuisine, specialties and services available, such as the cooking classes. Vintage France will be closed starting Thursday through Feb. 8. For more information, visit www.vintagefrance.com [[In-content Ad]]
