MUNCIE - At the midway point of the volleyball season, Warsaw coach Doug West set up a meeting with his team.

"On September 24, we had a meeting to discuss where we were as a team," said West. "We were not playing poorly, but we wanted to step things up to the next level."

That meeting lit a fire under the Tigers. They finished the rest of the regular season 10-3, including two wins at the Clinton Prairie Tournament, and went on to win the Carroll Sectional by defeating Carroll and Columbia City.

"We played great in the second half of the season," said West. "I think the second half of the season really showed the fruits of our labor."

Saturday in the Muncie Regional, the Warsaw squad faced off against Fort Wayne Snider in the opening game of the regional. Earlier in the season, Warsaw fell to Snider 3-1, 21-11, 21-14, 13-21, 21-10.

Saturday the result was the same as the Tigers fell to the Panthers 3-1 in the Muncie Central Regional.

The Panthers took an early lead in the first game, going up 2-1 as Jacquelyn Mahuren stepped to the serving line. The Snider junior opened her stint at the line with an ace and the served up three more points to put her team up 6-2.

Snider took that lead and ran with it, picking up a 21-11 win in the first game.

The Panthers took the momentum from that game one win and carried it into game two. Snider took a 2-1 lead early and went up 5-3 when Warsaw senior Michelle DeGeeter stepped to the line to serve. DeGeeter aced her first serve and added another point to tie the score at 5-all before Snider regained the serve.

The teams traded points for several possessions before Mahuren strung together two points and started a Snider run. Two possessions later, Panther junior Abbey Whitcraft broke the game open with three straight points that put Snider up 19-12.

Warsaw got the ball back and Cheyenne Runnells served a Warsaw point, but the Tigers were unable to overcome the Snider lead. The Panthers won the second game 21-14 to go up 2-0 in the match.

The Tigers were down, but not out.

Warsaw was down 4-2 in the third game when Rebekah Reichard stepped to the serving line. Reichard's second service point tied the score at 4-all, then her next point gave Warsaw it's first lead of the match, 5-4.

Snider got the serve back with the score tied at 5-all, and the teams traded possessions until the score was 11-9 in Snider's favor.

Enter Tiger sophomore Julie Seiss. Seiss served seven straight points to give the Tigers a 16-12 lead.

That was the spark Warsaw needed. With the score 17-12, Danielle DeGeeter stepped to the line and served three more points, including an ace, to put the Tigers in command 20-13.

After Snider missed its next serve, Warsaw won the game 21-13.

"We played very well in the third game," said West. "We had great pursuit in the third game. We stayed focused and sustained rallies."

Snider got back on track in the fourth match and picked up a 21-10 win to earn a spot in the Regional finals against Muncie Central. The Panthers went on to lose in the final match in three games to the defending state champion Bearcats.

The Tigers will see just two seniors graduate from this year's squad. Michelle DeGeeter and Heather Barrett played their last high school match in the regional Saturday.

"It has really been a fun experience this year," said West. "Michelle and Heather did a great job leading this team as seniors. They helped the team stay focused and really set the standard for the team with their effort and hard work."

Warsaw finishes the season with a 24-10 overall record.
