Phil Jensen could have talked about the three fumbles his team lost that led to three NorthWood scores.
He could have talked about the way NorthWood closed the first half with a touchdown and opened the second half with a touchdown, bumping the Panthers' lead from 21-14 to 35-14 in a span of seven minutes.
But football coaches like Warsaw's Jensen have a way of hacking off the excess fat and seeing things the way they are.
What Jensen saw Friday night at Fisher Field was NorthWood 49, Warsaw 28.
"You can talk fumbles," he said. "but the bottom line is, NorthWood is a tradition-rich, well-coached, football-playing team. They showed it with their execution, their game-playing, their intensity and their ability to make big plays."
NorthWood, No. 8, improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Warsaw fell to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the NLC and is fighting for third place.
Four plays into the game, Warsaw quarterback Andy Plank bounced a pitch off running back Derrick Duncan's shoulder pads. NorthWood covered the fumble. Six plays later, NorthWood running back Aaron Huber scored on an 11-yard run.
Duncan then turned in Warsaw's highlight. Duncan rumbled 74 yards the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, running through and over and laying waste to NorthWood tacklers. His score tied the game at 7-7 with 7:20 to go in the first quarter.
NorthWood followed with an eight-play drive capped off by a 24-yard touchdown run by Huber. NorthWood led 14-7 with 4:05 left in the first.
The score stayed the same until early in the second quarter, when NorthWood recovered a Plank fumble. For the second time, a Warsaw fumble set up a NorthWood score. Thee plays later, Huber score on an 8-yard run to make it 21-7 with 9:55 left in the first half.
Two early fumbles led to two NorthWood scores.
Still, Warsaw hung tough. Even with the two mistakes, Duncan's 34-yard run with 2:20 to go in the half put the Tigers back in it 21-14.
Then talented NorthWood sophomore quarterback Charlie Roeder played beyond his years.
Roeder completed a 16-yard pass to Blair Baumgartner and an 18-yard pass to Joe Abel and followed them with a 28-yard run on a busted pass play. His run moved NorthWood to Warsaw's 6-yard line. The next play, Huber scored on a pitch from Roeder to make it 28-14 with 30 seconds left before halftime.
NorthWood opened the second half with a 13-play drive, sparked by runs of 15, 14 and 14 yards by Roeder. His 14-yard pass to receiver Jake Yoder put the Panthers up 35-14 with 6:49 to go in the third quarter. Even though he's only a sophomore, Roeder through it over Yoder's shoulder on a timing pattern and laid it in perfectly.
"We got off to a good start," NorthWood coach Rich Dodson said. "The fumbles were a big factor. Anytime you take away some turnovers and turn those into scores, that's always big."
Roeder finished the game with 140 passing yards and 107 rushing yards.
Another Warsaw fumble late in the game would set up another NorthWood touchdown that moved the Panthers' lead to 49-20.
Three Warsaw fumbles led to three NorthWood scores. And when the Tigers weren't helping NorthWood, they never found a way to stop the Panthers' offense, specifically Roeder.
"We were up and down the field, weren't we?" Dod said. "I was happy to see us score 49 points. We're happy to be 6-2. We beat a good Warsaw team."
"We talked about not turning the ball over. But we go out there and turn it over, and they turn them into points," Jensen said.
The 49 points were 21 more than Warsaw had given up in any game this season.
"Their program beat our program in every phase of the game," Jensen said. "They have great athletes, athletes who are great football players. Their coaching staff outcoached our coaches, and their players outplayed our players. Getting our butt kicked by NorthWood's football team does not change the pride I have in our football team. We've come this far. Now we need to fuel ourselves to go even further.
Jensen paused, then held his fingers a few inches apart.
"We've got this much further to go," he said. "That's the hardest part of the journey." [[In-content Ad]]
