MISHAWAKA - In three games at the East Noble Sectional last week, Warsaw's girls soccer team sliced through the competition, outscoring Lakeland, Wawasee and Westview by a combined score of 19-1.

In Wednesday night's regional final at Penn High School, however, the high-scoring Lady Tigers ran into the defensive-minded Penn Lady Kingsmen.[[In-content Ad]]The 12th-ranked Lady Kingsmen held Warsaw in check and came away with a 3-1 win. The victory gave Penn (16-2-2) its fourth-straight regional championship and fifth in six years.

The Lady Kingsmen, who won the sectional championship last week with three shutouts, will play No. 13 Chesterton (19-1-1) in the Valparaiso Semistate Saturday.

"They're probably the best team we've played all year, in terms of speed and athleticism," said Warsaw coach Dan Miller, whose team finished the season with a 12-5-3 record. "I definitely think we played with them, but I think the better team won."

With goals from Katherine Burns (35th minute), Allison Scholtes (53rd minute) and Kimberly Luttrell, Penn took a 3-0 lead over the Lady Tigers.

Sophomore standout Meredith Hollar scored Warsaw's goal in the 76th minute.

After Hollar scored 11 goals in the Lady Tigers' three sectional wins, Penn's defense provided much more of a challenge.

"Hollar's a good player," said Penn coach Mike Luber. "We've got some really good backs. We tracked her very nicely."

Luber, whose team plays a four-back scheme, praised Shannon Reid, Alyssa Ummel, Bailey Personette and Bailey O'Malley for their effort on the defensive end.

"Penn played very composed in the back," said Miller. "They put midfield pressure on us and that made it tough for us to have space and get balls through to Meredith. I still think she was a handful for them, though."

After Burns put Penn up 1-0, Scholtes scored on a penalty kick 18 minutes later.

Miller said that goal was the "tipping point" and that it "took the wind out out of our sails."

Despite his team's season coming to an end, Miller was excited about what the Lady Tigers were able to do this season and said he was excited about next season.

Warsaw, which had just three seniors in its starting lineup, won the sectional championship for the first time since 2003 and returns the majority of its team.

"That was a step in the right direction," Miller said of snapping the six-year sectional drought. "We accomplished four of the five goals we set. The only one we didn't get was winning the conference. We have eight returning starters for next year. I'm very excited about next year."
