Warsaw Falls At Goshen
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
GOSHEN - Second-year Warsaw football coach Troy Akers said he believes teams play like they practice.
Unfortunately for he and his staff, that's what the Tigers did Friday night against Northern Lakes Conference opponent Goshen, falling 14-7 at Foreman Field on the Redskins' homecoming night.
Following what Akers described as a bad week of practice, Warsaw, other than the first drive of the game, was anything but sharp Friday night.
"Miscues and turnovers killed us," said Akers, whose team needed a win to stay near the top of the NLC standings. "We haven't had turnovers and penalties like that for five games. Tonight we didn't execute at critical times. I'm a believer in the saying you practice like you play. We didn't practice well this week. Blame it on ISTEP tests or whatever, they had those here this week, too."
Friday's seven-point loss ended the Tigers' three-game winning streak and dropped their overall season record to 4-2 and their conference mark to 2-2. Goshen, a team that finished the season 0-10 last year and 3-7 in 2003, improved to 4-2 overall and is now 3-1 in the NLC.
With coach Shan Hartsough in his first year as head coach at Goshen, replacing the departed Andy Strati, the Redskins appear to have that toughness and swagger the program used to have.
After starting the season 1-2, Goshen beat NorthWood at Jim Andrews Field, came back from a 21-point deficit to beat then-undefeated Concord and scored 14 unanswered points to beat the Tigers.
"All I'll say is, this is a group of guys that believes in what we're doing," said Hartsough. "It starts with the seniors. Some of these seniors have started for two years and taken their lumps. I told the seniors they were going to make us."
What made Goshen Friday against the visiting Tigers was a stingy defense.
A defense that, after it allowed Warsaw to score on the first possession of the game, buckled down and held its ground.
Tiger senior quarterback Mark Sudhoff threw for 949 yards and seven touchdowns through the first five games. Prior to Friday, he had thrown just three interceptions.
In last night's game, the 6-foot-2 signal caller was picked off four times, and the Warsaw offense started four possessions inside Goshen's 50 in the fourth quarter and couldn't convert.
"This defensive staff every game has done a great job getting the kids to believe in the system," said Hartsough.
Cameron Yoder led Goshen's defense with two interceptions, while Zack Wolfe and Ben Goehring each picked off one Sudhoff pass.
Said Akers of Goshen, "They played a great game tonight. Their kids hustle on and off the field, on offense, on defense. That says a lot."
Trailing 14-7, Warsaw started a drive at Goshen's 29-yard line with 10:34 remaining in the game.
After the offense failed to move the ball, senior Jake Rogers attempted a 46-yard field. His kick had plenty of distance but sailed wide right.
Warsaw's defense held and forced the Redskins to punt on the ensuing drive, with senior Matt Boots blocking the punt.
The Tiger offense took over on Goshen's 21-yard line.
On fourth-and-2 from the 13, Sudhoff carried the ball and came up a yard short.
After forcing Goshen to punt three plays later, Warsaw started a drive at the Redskin 33-yard line with 3:03 to play.
The Tigers' drive lasted all of one play, as Yoder intercepted his second Sudhoff pass of the game.
Goshen again went three-and-out on its next possession, and started a drive at the Redskin 49-yard line with 1:31 remaining in the game.
And again the Tigers' hopes for a comeback were cut short by an interception, this time with Sudhoff being picked off by Goehring with 45 seconds to play in the game.
"We got off to a great start," said Akers. "But we didn't do anything (on offense) the rest of the night. Give credit to Goshen's defense."
Warsaw had the ball to start the game and scored with 6:29 remaining in the first quarter when senior Tyler Hamman scored from a yard out to record his first touchdown of the year.
The opening drive was highlighted by an 18-yard run by Sudhoff, a 14-yard scamper by Hamman and a 21-yard pass from Sudhoff to classmate Mitch Reinholt.
The drive covered 64 yards in 11 plays and took 6:31 off the clock.
Hamman finished the game with 14 carries for 58 yards, while Sudhoff carried 12 times for 63 yards. Sudhoff completed 10 of 23 passes for 104 yards.
Chas Simpson, who entered the contest averaging 32.5 yards per catch, had four receptions for 40 yards. J.W. Maierle had two catches for 25 yards, while Reinholt made two catches for 21 yards.
Ben Schrock scored both touchdowns for the host Redskins, both coming on two-yard runs. Joe King kicked both extra-point attempts.
Schrock's first touchdown came with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter. His second score came with 38 seconds left in the third quarter.
Schrock finished the game with six carries for 20 yards. Najee Slade carried 14 times for 25 yards, while Jon Rolon had 22 yards on nine carries.
Senior Shane Parson completed 8 of 14 passes for 119 yards for the Redskins. Justin Blosser had three catches for 53 yards.
Warsaw is in action again Friday when it hosts rival Wawasee. Goshen travels to Northridge.
