By Staff Report-
The teachers began the 2011-2012 school year working on projects ranging from science to poetry to life skills, and their students will benefit from the in-depth learning these opportunities will provide.
Red Apple Grants are awarded to teachers for classroom projects as well as school-wide projects that advance enrichment opportunities, support innovative and inventive teaching and promote academic exploration.
Red Apple Grants awarded for the first semester of the 2011-2012 school year are:
– Tom Ray, Washington Elementary School, “Soil Testing and Growing Plants”
Materials purchased for this program will provide kindergarten through sixth-grade students with soil-testing sensors to be used to determine which types of soils are best for growing different types of plants from seed. This will teach students the scientific processes of hypothesis, observation, scientific notation, experimentation and scientific technology.
– Megan Davis, Leesburg Elementary School, “Bringing the Classroom to ‘Life’”
Aquatic habitats and their live inhabitants as well as life-cycle models of frogs, butterflies, ants and honeybees are examples of materials purchased for this program to engage fourth-grade students in the scientific study of nature.
– Gina Courtois, Madison Elementary School, “Making Math Fun”
Math manipulatives for kindergarten students to use in learning numbers, shapes, money values and telling time. This will create a fun learning environment for students to gain a strong foundation in basic math concepts.
– Krista Atkins, Leesburg Elementary School, “Of Body and Mind”
Scale models of the human body systems such as the lungs, the heart, the brain and the eye are just a few examples of materials purchased for the science lab at Leesburg to provide kindergarten through sixth-grade students an engaging process to study health and science state standards.
– Amanda Scroggs, Dave Bailey, Steve Henn, and Liane Stewart, Warsaw Community High School, “Live, Laugh, Love: The Senior Success Center”
Graduation coaches will use materials purchased to conduct workshops for at-risk students on goal-setting, physical and financial wellness, and preparation for college and/or career. The purpose is to keep students focused on completing the requirements for graduation as well as preparing them for life beyond high school.
– James Bolduc, Warsaw Community Schools Chess, “2011 Manager of the Year”
The Mon Roi Personal Chess Manager is the only electronic device endorsed by the United States Chess Federation for use during chess tournaments. Kindergarten through 12th-grade chess club sponsors will be able to use this technology to analyze players’ moves and develop a chess curriculum and lessons for improvement based upon the analysis.
– Tiffany Cooksey, Claypool Elementary School, “Bringing Poetry ‘Alive’ Across the Year”
Second-grade students will study poetry throughout the school year by reading, writing, illustrating and recording poems to create a love for language, develop word awareness, read fluently and make connections to literature.
Founded in 1987, the Warsaw Education Foundation has awarded more than $200,000 in grants to teachers in Warsaw Community Schools through the Red Apple Grant Program. Warsaw Education Foundation believes that investing in academic excellence today will return excellent leadership tomorrow.
