Warsaw Dominates Memorial In Sectional Opener

Nikki Grose's double-double leads Lady Tigers to 59-24 win
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

MIDDLEBURY – The gameplan for Tuesday’s sectional opener, said Warsaw girls basketball coach Michelle Harter, was to frustrate Elkhart Memorial senior Khadijah Moore and take the Ball State University recruit out of her game.
The Lady Tigers (10-9) did just that, as Moore struggled through a 4-of-16 performance from the field and Warsaw cruised to a 59-24 win in Class 4A Sectional 4 action at Northridge High School.
“We wanted to come out tonight and play a solid all-around game, offensively and defensively,” said Harter, whose team allowed more than five points in only one of the four quarters.
“We wanted to take Moore out of her game and frustrate her,” added Harter. “Our girls were focused on defense and did a great job.”
After winning just two of their first seven games, the Lady Tigers have won eight of their last 10 and advanced to Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal against Northridge.
Warsaw beat Northridge 30-28 on Jan. 11 in Warsaw.
“Northridge is a very well-rounded team,” said Harter. “We have to come out Friday and take care of the ball and be patient on offense. We have to do the same type of things we did tonight, but at a higher level.”
Concord and Goshen will meet in Friday’s second semifinal game.
Concord beat Elkhart Central 43-40 in Tuesday’s other first-round matchup.
Elkhart Memorial, which saw its season end with a 6-11 record, got 10 points and five rebounds out of Moore.
While Moore struggled, however, Warsaw senior Nikki Grose was nearly unstoppable.
Behind a 9-of-11 shooting performance, Grose finished the game with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Grose led the Crimson Chargers 14-6 by herself at halftime.
“Nikki played huge for us,” said Harter. “That’s what you want from your senior leader, for them to step up in the tournament and play their best game.”
Grose said Moore put something about the game on social media, and the Lady Tigers used it as motivation.
“We were inspired to come out and beat them again,” said Grose, who helped the Lady Tigers end Memorial’s streak of sectional titles at seven last year. “We wanted to frustrate Khadija and get in her head.”
Warsaw’s defense frustrated just about every Memorial player who stepped on the court.
The Crimson Chargers were just 9 of 35 (26 percent) from the field overall, 4 of 15 from the arc, and 2 of 6 at the free throw line.
The Lady Tigers, on the other hand, were 23 of 42 (55 percent) overall, 5 of 14 from the arc, and 8 of 10 at the charity stripe.
Junior Pam Miller scored nine points for Warsaw, while seniors Eryn Leek and Brooklyn Harrison finished with eight and seven points, respectively.
Harrison also had team-highs with six assists and three steals.
“It was a team effort by everyone,” said Harter. “Eryn Leek hit some shots and Brooklyn Harrison was great on the defensive end.”
Warsaw led 14-5 after one quarter of play, 31-6 at halftime and 45-21 at the end of the third quarter.
