Warsaw Delivers Worst Performance At Lake Central Tournament

The Tiger wrestlers had a disappointing Saturday at Lake Central.
Although five wrestlers placed, none took a championship, and the team finished ninth with 104 points. Lake Central dominated the double-elimination tournament with 193.5 points and three champions.
"We have always finished in the top four or better, and we've taken home the third-place trophy before," said Warsaw coach Tony Boley, "I thought we would do better."
Warsaw's Kris Hueber (215 pounds) took second place after a strong showing in earlier rounds. He scored two pins and a major decision to advance to the finals. There Hueber was handed his only defeat of the season.
Hueber spent much of the match chasing his opponent, who was finally called for stalling to give Hueber a penalty point, but he still came out on the short end, losing in 5-4 decision.
Warsaw's Richard Wolfe (171), who worked hard to improve in the off-season by involvement in freestyle, also settled for second place.
Wolfe snatched a 10-second fall in his first match and then pinned his next opponent in 1:25. In the semi-final, Wolfe knocked off No. 1 seed Adam Anderson of Highland in a 5-3 overtime win. In the championship, Munster's Dan Mize beat Wolfe 5-0.
"I was disappointed in the first round," Coach Boley said, "because there were probably five matches that we lost by a point, a takedown, something that occurred in the last 30 seconds, and that is not the way we normally wrestle.
"Competitiveness improved with each round, and we had some kids step it up."
Wrestlers who lost in either of the first two rounds headed to a consolation wrestle-off for fifth and sixth place.
Warsaw's Tanner Connealy (125) went to the wrestle-off after losing in round one by a 12-1 major decision to the eventual champion, Griffith's Andrae Hernandez. Connealy advanced with a pair of forfeits and scored a 10-2 major decision and a solid victory in a 14-3 major decision to take fifth place with only one loss through the day.
In his last match, he executed three smashing takedowns and a couple of nearfalls, which prompted Boley to say, "This is the best he has ever wrestled."
Warsaw's Anthony Boley (119) lost in round one and then notched three wins, including a fall, but was finally pushed into sixth place, losing 15-6 to South Bend Washington's Steve Lopez. Adam Bott (135) crunched his first opponent by scoring a 16-0 technical fall (15 points or more), but he was then sent to the wrestle-off.
Bott won his next two matches with a 5-4 decision and a fall in 1:51 but was handed sixth place in a tough 6-4 overtime loss to Griffith's Mark Govert.
Other Tiger wrestlers recording wins were Kyle Boley (130), who, said Tony Boley, "looked real good in his first round, but then he started facing some upper classmen who were a lot stronger, and they just threw him around."
John Milton (140) lost his opening match to the eventual champion, North Central's Jay Akers. Milton went on to take took two wins, as did Tyler Miller after a loss in round one. David Sumpter (145) scored a fall in his first match but then he also fell to a champion, Lake Central's Michael Escobedo. Sumpter recorded a second fall before he was eliminated, and David Ferguson earned two wins, a tech fall and a pin.
Coach Boley noted that the competition in northwest Indiana was at a higher level than anything the Tigers have seen so far this year.
"Even in consolation matches for fifth and six place," said Boley, "we noticed how much tougher the kids were. So we must pick it up in practice, and we need to learn how to finish, how to win. When we get opponents on their back, we need to get it done."
The next event for Warsaw is against conference foe Plymouth, there on 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7.
