Warsaw Defense Clamps Down On Goshen
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Combined, Goshen's varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams scored 36 points against Warsaw last night, while Warsaw's varsity and JV combined for 92 points.
The Tigers dominated the junior varsity contest 45-8 before the varsity Tigers overwhelmed the Redskins 47-28.
The record-low scoring total for a Warsaw varsity opponent is 17 by Triton during the 1987-88 season. The win pushes Warsaw's overall record to 11-5 and 5-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Goshen falls to 3-13 and 0-5 in the NLC.
Sara Parker scored Warsaw's two first points on two free throws, giving the Tigers a lead they never relinquished. Parker finished the opening frame with three points and eight in the game. Tiger sophomore Kara Kesler led all scorers with 10 points, the first time she's led the team in scoring. Goshen was led by Steph Mast's seven points.
Warsaw's defensive pressure in the first quarter allowed the opposition only five shots. The Redskins connected on one of them, a Shanna Hoogenboom three-pointer. The Tigers outscored Goshen 10-3 en route to snapping a three-game skid.
Warsaw stayed with the defensive emphasis in the second stanza sending the Redskins to the locker rooms with 2-of-11 shooting and a 20-point deficit, 25-5.
"We've been a first-half defensive team all year long," said Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst. "We've held some good teams to low points. It's our offense that struggles and our turnovers. So we focused on turnovers and our shooting goes."
Warsaw shot just 3 of 21 in the first frame and by halftime the Tigers had only connected on10 of 39 (25.6 percent) field goal attempts.
Kesler opened the third-quarter scoring with four consecutive points pushing the Warsaw advantage to 29-5. The Redskins were held to just four points in the third quarter and found themselves down 34-9 heading into the final frame.
Goshen's offense finally started to show signs of life in the fourth quarter as the Redskins outscored Warsaw 19-13 accounting for the 47-28 final.
After the Tigers started the season 8-1 they've gone 3-4 in their last seven games with the sectional right around the corner.
"Tonight (Thursday) the girls came back to being themselves," said Wienhorst. "And that's the first step."
Warsaw (11-5, 5-0) will be in action again Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. when they host conference foe NorthWood.
"We have three days to practice for the best team on our schedule, NorthWood, for the conference championship," said Wienhorst.
