Warsaw Declares Deer Nuisance Zones

Trained archers are one step closer to hunting in the Warsaw city limits.

During its meeting Monday night, Warsaw City Council approved a resolution determining six deer nuisance zones in the city limits.

The council must approve the nuisance zones as reduction zones before trained archers are allowed to hunt in the zones.

This will be the sixth year for the reduction efforts, if approved, that will take place September through January.

The council approved six nuisance zones, including district one: Springhill, Kosciusko Community Hospital; district two: Boggs, Madison School area; district three: Rozella, Warsaw Community High School and Logan Street area; district four: Lakeview Middle School and Country Club area; district five: Hidden Lake; and district six: Hire Park.

The council also approved allowing task force archers to hunt on approved private properties in the approved nuisance zones.

Also during the meeting, the council approved an ordinance amendment for limitations on bows and arrows and slingshots.

The ordinance states there will be a $250 fine for any person who is found to be in possession of a bow and arrows used to take wild game or whitetail deer within any area within the city limits designated as deer nuisance zones.

There also is a $100 fee for any landowner within a designated deer nuisance zone to give permission to any archer who is not approved by the deer task force to hunt on the landowner’s property.

The ordinance also states any archer who is not approved for the task force who is found to be in possession or control of a deer taken within a deer nuisance zone will be subject to a fine of $250, a $500 fine for the second offense, and a fine of no less than $750 and no more than $2,500 for the third offense.

The council also approved an ordinance to remove street parking along the north side of Prairie Street from Buffalo Street to Union Street.

The council also approved an ordinance to transfer for the building and planning department  $8,500 from improvements other than buildings to professional services for building a pedestrian bridge over Walnut Creek.

The council also:

- Approved an ordinance to transfer $135,000 from the street main budget machinery and equipment fund to street main budget repairs and maintenance to allow for street paving.

- Approved a $25,000 transfer from the street main budget other services and charges to street main budget street repairs and maintenance. The transfer is for garbage truck repairs and items normally taken from the motor vehicle highway fund and local roads and streets repairs and maintenance, which have been depleted.

- Approved a $59,500 transfer of funds from street main budget salaries to street main budget operating supplies. The transfer is necessary to cover the cost of fuel for the rest of the year.[[In-content Ad]]
