Warsaw Cross Country Teams Win Invite Championships

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

The weather Tuesday evening was nearly perfect, and rather uncharacteristic for this time of the year.
The outcome for Warsaw’s boys and girls cross country teams was nearly perfect too, something a little more common.
Hosting the annual Tiger Invitational, the Tigers and Lady Tigers dominated their respective 5K races en route to team championships.
Warsaw’s girls squad started the evening’s events in fine fashion, as junior Allison Miller won in a time of 19:05, four seconds ahead of runner-up and sophomore teammate Mia Beckham.
The Lady Tigers saw all five of their scoring runners finish among the top six of the 152-person race.
Warsaw had seven of the top 10 finishers in the girls race.
The end result was a near-perfect score, as the Lady Tigers won with 17 points, while Columbia City was a distant second as a team with 96 points.
The only non-Warsaw girls runner in the top six was Winamac junior Claire Collins, who crossed the line fourth in a time of 19:41.
“What we did today is because of what the girls did this summer,” said Warsaw girls coach Scott Erba, whose squad won its own invitational for the fifth-straight year. “Over the last six years, we’ve kept track of how many girls are running miles in the summer, and we had far more girls run far more miles this summer than we ever have. That’s just the depth we have. These girls worked so hard this summer. This isn’t about the training we’ve done the last two weeks ... it was the training the girls did in June and July.”
Huntington North finished third as team in the girls event with 106 points, followed by Manchester (129), Bishop Luers (145), Northfield (155), NorthWood (175), Fairfield (191), Winamac (196) and Tippecanoe Valley (266).
Junior Rae Bedke led the Manchester Lady Squires with a ninth-place time of 20:02, while junior Suzi Sickafoose paced the Whitko Lady Wildcats, who didn’t have enough runners for a team score, with a 21st-place time of 21:28.
Senior Karly Kitch led Tippecanoe Valley with a 46th-place time of 22:54.
While Erba knew what kind of team he has, as the Lady Tigers had already competed in the Huntington North Invitational, Warsaw boys coach Jim Mills’ crew toed the line for the first time this season Tuesday.
Mills, who used the words “pleasantly surprised” after his team claimed the championship, had plenty to smile about.
The Tigers won the boys team title with 45 points, while Winamac was a distant second with 76 points.
Homestead finished third with 81 points, followed by NorthWood (100), Columbia City (149), Bishop Luers (160), Fairfield (181), Manchester (187), Northfield (227) and Tippecanoe Valley (277).
“Well, I’ll tell you what, we expect rocky roads for a month,” said Mills. “We are so young, and we’ve got some kids that didn’t come out. We’re making due with what we’ve got.
“Zeb Hernandez ran No. 3 for us tonight, he’s a freshman. We’ve got a lot of young kids, and we’ve got a long way to go training-wise. I gotta tell you, I’m really surprised that we won tonight, to be honest. I didn’t know who all was gonna be here, team-wise. I’m pleasantly surprised at how our guys ran, they really stepped up.”
Of the Tigers’ top seven runners, all of whom finished in the top 23 of the 195-person boys race, there were two seniors, three sophomores and two freshman.
Leading the way was senior Owen Glogovsky, who won in a course-record time of 15:48, 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Kyle Collins of Winamac.
“He now holds the course record,” Mills said of Glogovsky. “He’s been preceeded by some pretty respectable runners. I told (assistant coaches) Rob (Peters) and Greg (Murphy) all year this is the strongest I’d seen him consistently. He looks like a different runner this year, so knock on wood, we hope he stays healthy, but he’s in good shape right now.”
Warsaw’s other four scoring runners were sophomore Lucas Howett (4th, 16:42), freshman Zeb Hernandez (9th, 17:25), sophomore Nathaniel Gottschalk (14th, 17:33) and sophomore Francisco Ramirez (17th, 17:37).
Sophomore Thomas Rohr led Manchester with a sixth-place time of 16:43, while senior Jesse Floor paced Tippecanoe Valley with a 22nd-place time of 17:58.
Whitko and Lakeland Christian Academy also competed, but didn’t have enough runners for a team score.
Junior Josh Wright led Whitko with a 30th-place time of 18:14, while senior Alex Plastow paced LCA with an 88th-place time of 20:06.
