Two people were killed Friday night when their car was hit by a pickup at the intersection of Zimmer and Crystal Lake roads, just west of Warsaw.
Police would not release the names of the two killed or any names of the other passengers involved.
One car and a full-sized, dual-wheel pickup were involved in the accident that occurred around 8:28 p.m.
According to a preliminary police investigation, the car was turning south onto Zimmer Road when the pickup allegedly ran the stop sign at the intersection and struck the car. The pickup was driving north on Zimmer Road when it reportedly struck the car on the driver's side.
After the initial impact, the two vehicles ended up across the intersection on the north side of the road.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead of head injuries at the scene by Kosciusko County coroner Larry Ladd. A juvenile male passenger in the back seat was also pronounced dead in the car.
A woman who stopped at the accident scene reportedly held the boy as he died.
Two other passengers in the car were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital. An infant who was in a car seat in the vehicle was also taken to KCH. Police reported the infant appeared to be doing well and was crying during rescue efforts.
The Warsaw Fire Department cut the roof of the car and opened the driver's side to extract the three passengers.
The driver and two passengers in the pickup truck were also taken to be checked at KCH. Another passenger allegedly fled the accident scene on foot, police reported.
Multi-Township EMS assisted in transporting people to the hospital and members of KEMRAD assisted with traffic control after the accident. Winona Lake Police Department and Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department were also on the scene. [[In-content Ad]]
