Warsaw, Concord Battle To Draw In Boys Soccer Action

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

What has become a heated and physical high school boys soccer rivalry continued Wednesday evening in Dunlap.
In a Northern Lakes Conference matchup between the Class 2A No. 4 Warsaw Tigers and the host Concord Minutemen, there were warnings for physical play, yellow cards and a red card.
And when all was said and done after 80 minutes of play, the teams left the pitch deadlocked in a 1-1 tie for the second-straight year.
“Under the circumstances, I’ll take the draw,” said Warsaw coach Scott Bauer. “With that said, it’s my mistake for not warning the guys about playing here. The fans are rabid here, and that’s the way it should be. It’s soccer. I want our fans to get excited at our place too.”
Senior Edson Pineda gave the Minutemen a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute of play.
Concord held that advantage until junior Manuel Rodriguez evened the scored with a goal in the 69th minute.
“I thought we responded well and dominated play in the second half,” said Bauer, whose team was a man short because of senior Zach Tucker getting a red card late in the first half. “Playing a man down for more than a half is stressful. We have to do a better job keeping our heads. I hope the guys understand that.”
In last year’s game at Warsaw, the Tigers came away with a draw after scoring with just over a minute remaining.
Wednesday night it looked as if Warsaw had some more late-game magic, as junior Tito Cuellar had an opportunity to score the game-winning goal with just under three minutes left.
As Concord goalie Anthony Saleh collided with a teammate, Cuellar tried to be the game’s hero, but Concord junior Trenton Snyder slid and deflected the shot.
“We created some opportunities in the second half,” said Bauer. “At halftime we talked about Xs and Os. I challenged the guys to step up and play like a Warsaw team.”
Both teams took five shots in the game, with each getting three shots on goal.
Both teams had two corner kicks.
Warsaw is now 3-0-3 on the season overall and 1-0-1 in the NLC.
Concord is now 5-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
“This doesn’t hurt us in the NLC at all,” said Bauer, whose team forfeited last year’s conference title to Concord because of using an ineligible player. “We still haven’t lost a conference match on the field in three seasons.”
The Tigers are in action again today at 6:30 p.m. at Class 1A No. 8 Fort Wayne Blackhawk.
