Though saddled with injuries, Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team was healthy enough to pull out a 77-73 win over visiting Northern Lakes Conference opponent NorthWood Friday in the Tiger Den.

Senior starter Andrew Holladay missed the game after suffering a concussion in last week's loss to Concord, while classmate Michael Wienhorst played with a brace on his right knee and junior Shaun Cabrera again played with a sore back.

Neither the NorthWood Panthers or the bumps and bruises denied the Tigers, as they improved to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the NLC.

"I'm very proud of our guys," said Ogle, whose Tigers defeated NorthWood 52-51 in overtime in the opening round of the NLC Tournament Dec. 28 at the Panther Pit. "There were times where we were our own worst enemy, but we didn't implode and we kept battling and the team stayed together."

Cabrera, whose sore back stems from a condition with a sciatic nerve, gave the Tigers a 72-70 lead with 3:42 remaining in the third overtime. The score remained the same until the 5-foot-11 junior hit two free throws with 38.3 seconds left.

The Panthers cut the lead to one, 74-73, when junior Zach Lechlitner converted a three-point play with 27 seconds to play.

Tiger junior Colin Clemens cashed in two charity tosses seven seconds later to push the Warsaw lead back to three, and then the 6-4 frontliner grabbed a key rebound when Lechlitner missed a three-point attempt in the waning seconds that would have tied the game.

Clemens was fouled immediately and stepped back to the free throw line where he hit the first of the double-bonus opportunity to account for the final score.

Clemens, who last week was among the Warsaw wounded as he wore a wrap on his wrist, finished the game with a career-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Cabrera finished with 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds and a steal, while Wienhorst led all scorers with a career-high 30 points. Wienhorst, who last week injured his knee and was carried off the floor but came back out on crutches and then returned to the game, also tallied two steals and two assists in the four-point win.

"Colin I think took a step forward in terms of competing tonight," said Ogle. "I'm real proud of him. Wienhorst and Clemens and Cabrera refused to be denied in overtime. They hit some big shots."

The trio combined for 62 of Warsaw's 77 points and 28 of the Tigers' 35 rebounds.

Junior point guard John-Wesley Maierle scored eight points and had four assists, three rebounds and two steals before fouling out, while senior Nelson Conley scored three and juniors Mitchel Reinholt and Jordan Fuller had two each.

The Tigers, who trailed 7-0 early in the first quarter and later led by 14, 31-17, in the first quarter had their chances to get the win in regulation.

Conley stepped to the free throw line with 17.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter and missed two free throws. Lightfoot grabbed the rebound for NorthWood and tied the game at 58 with 10 seconds left, sending the NLC battle into the first overtime.

In the second overtime, Maierle knotted the game at 63-all when he scored a field goal with 58 seconds remaining.

Trevor Shields attempted a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the first overtime for NorthWood but missed the mark, and Clemens came down with the rebound.

The Tigers called time out with 5.5 seconds left, and while trying to put the game away the ball was tipped out with 1.5 seconds left and Warsaw couldn't get a shot off.

In the second four-minute overtime session Maierle gave Warsaw a 70-67 advantage with 25.2 ticks left on the clock, but the Panthers sent the game into the third and final extra session when Wes BeMiller converted three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt with 13.4 seconds left.

NorthWood, which had its winning streak stopped at six games, fell to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the NLC.

The Panthers, who were 22 of 57 from the field, 9 of 28 from three-point range, were led in scoring by Lightfoot's 26 points. He also had six assists and five rebounds in the loss.

Lechlitner chipped in with 20 points, while BeMiller had 12 and Shields 11.

"We showed a lot of toughness tonight," said Ogle. "Our toughness trumped our savvy. We need to get our savvy quite a bit higher. We really needed to get a win, and we played hard and got one."

Friday's win snapped a two-game skid for Warsaw.

The Tigers are in action again Friday when they host NLC opponent Elkhart Memorial.
