After five-straight boys tennis sectional championships, one would think they'd become almost boring to Warsaw Tigers coach Rick Orban.

Not exactly.[[In-content Ad]]"The boys were talking tonight about how I have never lost a sectional as a coach," Orban said after his team defeated Wawasee 5-0 in Friday's sectional championship match in Warsaw. "And it was funny when they came out, because they were saying they didn't want to be the first (to lose)."

The team definitely didn't disappoint, defeating Tippecanoe Valley 5-0 in first-round action, then getting right back on the courts to sweep the Warriors in the finals.

Originally scheduled to be played Thursday, the four-team tournament was moved to Friday due to rain. With play commencing at 3:30 p.m., Warsaw breezed to its first-round win, while it took Wawasee a little longer to dispatch Churubusco, 3-2.

With rain always threatening, and temperatures keeping fans huddled up, Wawasee and Warsaw got back on the courts as quickly as possible for the championship round.

And once on the courts, Warsaw tried to claim the sectional crown as quickly as possible.

"We came out against Wawasee really focused," Orban said. "Will Coen (during the season), went three sets with Nathan Brady, losing the first set, but winning the next two. We just decided we were the best team, and we didn't want to lower our level of play."

And they certainly did not lower their level of play, as not one Warsaw player lost a set in the day's two matches.

"It's impressive to go two matches in a row, and on all 10 courts to not lose a set," Orban said. "That is special. We didn't even lose that many games. The kids were really focused."

For Wawasee, coach Roger Brady didn't think his kids were quite as focused, sometimes being a little too concerned with the cold winds.

"The difference for us was the cold, but it's the same for both teams," Brady said. "They have to deal with it as much as we do. We have a couple of guys who get really freaked out if the conditions change, but that's part of the game. You have to play in the elements."

Despite a couple "freak outs," Brady was pleased with the play of Garly Windle at No. 2 singles, where he lost 6-1, 6-3, and the No. 1 doubles team of Nick Price and Ryan Smith.

After losing to Churubusco's 18-0 tandem of Alexander McDowell and Ryan Mey in the opening round, Price and Smith then fell 6-0, 6-1 to Warsaw's Andrew Cutshall and Shawn Carmichael in the championship.

"They had two really good teams they had to play against," Brady said of his No. 1 doubles team. "They're probably the best No. 1 team I've had in the three years since I came back. They were just stacked against a lot of good teams this year."

While Orban and the Tigers were pleased with the championship, the fanfare was subdued.

"We expected to win the sectional, we should have won the sectional," Orban said. "We were the better team. Now, we're just looking forward to the regional Tuesday."

At the Concord Regional, Warsaw will play the winner of the East Noble Sectional Tuesday. The East Noble Sectional resumes today at 10 a.m.

And while Warsaw's journey continues, Wawasee's ends, but Brady had no qualms about the result

"They were just a better team than we were," Brady said.
