Warsaw Boys Win 'Interesting' Game With Triton

“It was an interesting game,” Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said of his team’s 46-41 win over the Class 1A No. 6 Trojans.
The game featured a few conversations between coaches and officials, with the final one between Triton coach Jason Groves and the officials resulting in the baskets being put back down to allow junior Clay Yeo to take two free throws with 0:00.3 left on the clock.
The shots were awarded after Warsaw senior Lucas Grose was whistled for a foul in the final moments, but in the melee, the teams believed the game was over, as did the janitorial staff who began to put the rims up.
However, once the rims were lowered, Yeo made just one of the two free throws, a theme for the Trojans, who made just 4 of 12 free throw shots on the night.
“That’s what I talked to the guys about after the game,” Groves said. “I said, ‘You guys have to worry about things we can control.’ You can’t control the officials. You can control your free throws. You can control boxing out and not giving up offensive rebounds. They have to focus on things they can control and not worry about anything else.”
Triton was in control early, taking a 15-7 lead following a shot by Yeo with 6:48 left in the first half.
However, that bucket was Triton’s last of the half, as Warsaw forced six Trojan turnovers the rest of the half and used a 13-0 run to take a 20-15 lead at intermission.
“They cranked up the pressure a little bit,” Groves said. “In the first quarter, we were focusing on breaking their pressure, getting it down and running some offense. Take some time off the clock and shorten the game a little bit. I think they realized we were going to be patient and not take quick 3s off of their press — which I see a lot of teams do.”
While Triton was working to slow down the pace, Ogle was working on keeping fresh bodies on the floor.
By the time Groves made his first substitution of the game, which came at the 5:35 mark of the second quarter, nine different Tigers had already seen playing time.
“The fact we were playing nine guys was definitely beneficial for us,” Ogle said. “I do think they got a little bit tired, because we got the pressure on. This may be the deepest team I’ve had since I’ve been the coach.”
The deep team had eight different guys score, with sophomore reserve Jordan Stookey leading the way with 11 points, while senior Kevin West had eight, followed by Grose’s seven and junior Jared Bloom’s six.
“That’s one thing that makes Warsaw so good,” Groves said. “They have a lot of guys that can make plays. They’re definitely not a one-man team. They’re very balanced, very fundamentally sound.”
Whereas Warsaw was getting points from various players, the bulk of Triton’s points came from Yeo and sophomore Tanner Shepherd, who netted 36 of the team’s 41 points.
“We’ve been watching this all season long,” Groves said. “The thing I like about this team is, these guys can get their offense within what we want to do. The other guys need to step up, and they can. They’re not going to look to do too much, but they do need to step up a little bit and score a little bit more if we’re going to get through our conference, get through the Bi-County (tournament) and the second half of the season.”
Yeo finished with a game-high 20 points, while Shepherd had 16.
Of Shepherd's 16 points, 10 came in the third quarter, while Yeo scored 11 in the final quarter, helping to cut a 10-point lead to three with less than a minute to play.
“I told him, ‘Keep staying focused. You’re all right,'" Groves said about Yeo, who’s verbally committed to Valparaiso University. “We corrected some things. I thought he was kind of getting stuck driving baseline, so I told him to try to drive the middle a little bit more.”
Yeo found a way to get into the flow of the game, but the same couldn’t be said for Grose, who finished with a season low seven points on 2-of-7 shooting.
“We had to stop him, because he’s the guy they run their offense through,” Groves said about the Hillsdale College-bound Grose. “Our focus was on doubling him at first, then kind of mix it up between doubling and then just digging and keeping him off balance a little bit. I thought our guys did a really nice job.”
But with the depth of the Tigers, an off-night by Grose doesn’t mean the team will fade.
“I thought our bench played well,” Ogle said. “West and Stookey played well and Cone made a big play at the end of the third quarter. In a game where we couldn’t really get Lucas going much, our other guys rallied.”
Warsaw is right back in action Thursday at Fort Wayne South, but Triton has some time off, not getting back onto the court until Jan. 3 at Elkhart Christian.
