Warsaw Boys Win In Overtime

NAPPANEE - A matchup of high school boys basketball teams with feline mascots, Warsaw junior Colin Clemens was the biggest cat of all in Tuesday evening's opening round of the fifth and final Northern Lakes Conference Tournament.
Clemens, who hit a pair of free throws in the waning seconds to cap off a gutsy comeback win over Elkhart Central a week ago, scored the final two points of Tuesday's contest when he put back a teammates' miss as time ran out, lifting Warsaw to a thrilling 52-51 overtime win over the host NorthWood Panthers.
"I thought our offensive rebounding is what won us the game tonight," said third-year Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose Tigers improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Tigers out-rebounded the Panthers 29-23 overall.
On the offensive glass, Warsaw edged NorthWood 11-10, the decisive board coming at just the right time for the Tigers.
"I'm real proud of these guys," said Ogle, whose Tigers earned a rematch with rival Wawasee in tonight's semifinal round at Plymouth. "They could have easily folded but didn't. For starters, Michael Wienhorst is fearless. (John-Wesley) Maierle and (Shaun) Cabrera are very good under pressure. Colin Clemens has been huge. Mitch Reinholt continues to help us off the bench."
The two teams were knotted at 46 at the end of regulation and then NorthWood junior Ryne Lightfoot came out and drilled a deep three-pointer 14 seconds into the overtime session.
After Wienhorst cut the lead to one and the Tigers later got the rebound on a Panther miss, Maierle was called for an offensive foul and a Lightfoot field goal pushed NorthWood's lead back to three, 51-48, with 2:04 to play.
A minute later, Wienhorst made a steal near midcourt and cruised in a for layup.
With 31.3 seconds left, NorthWood's Wes BeMiller missed the first of a one-and-one free throw opportunity and Clemens went up high and got the rebound.
After working the clock, the Tigers attacked the basket, and when his teammate's shot missed, Clemens collected his ninth and arguably biggest rebound of the night and floated it over the rim for the win.
"Colin Clemens has been playing big for us," said Ogle.
Clemens finished the game 5 of 7 from the field with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Wienhorst and Cabrera led Warsaw with 16 points each, while Reinholt had six and Andrew Holladay and Maierle two each.
In Warsaw's last two games, both come-from-behind wins, Reinholt has come off the bench to average eight points and has missed just one shot from the field.
Lightfoot led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting, while BeMiller added 14 points for NorthWood on 6-of-13 shooting.
While Warsaw, which led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter, scored points in the paint, NorthWood was able to stay in the game and eventually take the lead with its three-point shooting.
The Tigers made just one three-point in the game, while NorthWood connected on eight, though the Panthers missed 16 of them.
The win improved the Tigers to 6-2; NorthWood fell to 3-3 with its third straight loss.
Warsaw battles rival Wawasee today at 7:30 p.m. at Plymouth High School, while Northridge and Plymouth battle in the first winners-bracket game at 6 p.m.
"We're very happy to have another chance at Wawasee," said Ogle, whose Tigers lost by 18 to Wawasee a week ago.
Concord and Elkhart Memorial open up play in the losers bracket at 2 p.m., followed by NorthWood and Goshen.
