Warsaw Boys Win Homestead Invitational

FORT WAYNE -Ê"For some reason we always play pretty good at this golf course."

Those words were from Warsaw golf coach Bob Turner moments after his sixth-ranked Tigers finished the Homestead Invitational with score of 311 at Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne.

That 311 was good for a first place finish in the 13-team invitational.

"I played my five seniors today," said Turner. "They tend to really root each other on. It may not be my best five but it's the five that get along and encourage each other."

While Turner may seem at a loss for words for why his Tigers seem to play so well at Chestnut Hills, he probably knows exactly why. Any golfer watching his Tigers would be impressed with their maturity on and off the golf course as well as their course management skills.

Chestnut Hills is a difficult course requiring players to use every club in their bag. Known for tight fairways and many hazards, it requires patience and well thought-out shots.

Those last two attributes propelled the Tigers to the top.

Turner said: "These kids understand course management. There is a perception among the other teams that the Warsaw kids don't use their woods too often, but we didn't have a lot of penalties either. I'll take it."

The Tigers were led by Matt Osbeck with a 76, while teammate Adam Johnson was just a shot back at 77.

Osbeck's 76 was good for a third place finish individually, while Johnson finished in a three-way tie for fourth.

"It's a tough course," said Osbeck. "We finally had some nice weather to play in and that was nice. I just went out and tried to hit fairways and greens. Course management is so important here. You have to hit a lot of irons off the tees. I hit it pretty straight today and that's a big key here. The course was very soft and played long."

While Osbeck was pleased with his round of 76 he was even more excited with his team's play.

"We played real well today with our five seniors," said Osbeck. "I think this is a big step for us and hopefully something we can build on."

Looking over the scorecards of the two seniors, one stat that jumps out is the absence of any bad holes. Johnson's double-bogey on the par-4 sixth hole was the only double-bogey between the two, something almost unheard of at Chestnut.

Johnson began the day with two bogeys and stood at five over par after six holes. Then he settled himself and played the last 12 holes even par.

Johnson's maturity on the course showed on the 13th hole. After hitting an iron off the tee to lay up short of water crossing the fairway, his second shot appeared headed to the right edge of the green. However, the ball took a bad bounce and kicked straight right into a hazard. He then played his chip to within a few feet and made the putt for a bogey-five. Instead of going to the next hole with emotions running high, Johnson collected himself and hit his approach on the par-3 to about eight feet from the hole. He then calmly knocked in the putt for a birdie-two.

Rounding out the Warsaw scoring were David Slater at 78, Greg Clay at 80 and Aaron Turner at 87.

"Quite honestly, I have been a little disappointed with our play prior to today," said Turner. "In our defense we haven't had decent weather, we haven't been at home hardly at all, and we have been playing some pretty tough golf courses under tough conditions when we have been away from home."

While Turner was all smiles, Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone was looking for answers.

His Warriors have had a habit of struggling at the Chestnut course and Saturday was not much different. His No. 18 Warriors finished tied for fourth in the field with a 328.

Leading the way for them was junior Steve Conrad with a 78, followed by fellow juniors Joel Bickel with an 80 and Evan Gerard with an 84. The lone senior Eric Andrews had an 86.

Junior Josh Abrams also finished at 86 but was disqualified after playing a wrong ball on the 18th hole and turning in his score before realizing his mistake.

Like many teams the Warriors, suffered on a few holes.

Wawasee's troubles began on the sixth hole where they made two double-bogeys and two bogeys. That trouble continued on the ninth hole where they also made two doubles.

The back was much like the front for Coverstone's team as they were again plagued with bad holes.

"We just have to look at this as a learning experience," said Coverstone. "We are young and this is another opportunity to play a course that we have to play well if we are to get to state."
