In a battle of storied high school boys basketball programs, the host Tigers started the game on a 7-0 run and opened the second half on a 6-0 run. Those spurts were the difference for the Tigers and propelled them to a 61-55 win over the Giants.[[In-content Ad]]It wasn't as shocking as stopping Marion's 40-game win streak in 1986, but with their victory Saturday night, the Tigers did halt an eight-game win streak by the Giants.
Warsaw, which started the season 8-2 but had lost four of its last five games, improved to 10-6 on the season, while Marion fell to 15-3.
"This is a really good win for us," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. "This was much-needed. Marion is a very good basketball team. I think they have the parts to make a run in the state tournament."
One of those parts, 6-foot-2 North Carolina State recruit Julius Mayes, did all he could to try and help his team win, while 6-5 guard Scott Wood, the team's leading scorer at 19 points per game, didn't even make the bus ride to Warsaw and has missed the last four games because of a leg injury.
With Warsaw winning 46-35 after three quarters of play, Mayes - playing with an injured shoulder - put his team on his back and scored 17 of his game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter.
The Giants cut the Tigers' lead to two, 57-55, when Jay Edwards hit the first of two free throw attempts with 42 seconds remaining, but Warsaw freshman Nic Moore rebounded the miss and nine seconds later senior Ryne Robinson converted two charity tosses.
Warsaw sophomore Andy Conrad added two more free throws with 16 seconds remaining to account for the final score.
"The quick start was helpful," said Ogle. "It really helped our confidence. I was hoping we'd get off to a good start and we did."
The Tigers never trailed in the game, and the Giants only tied the contest once, knotting the score at 16-all when Lamar Jackson scored with 3:56 remaining in the first half.
Warsaw led 14-8 after the first quarter and 29-24 at halftime.
"We got beat because we were not very heady," said Marion coach Joe Luce. "We gave up eight points where we didn't guard out of bounds plays or simple sets. Then, when we came back, those plays came back to haunt us. Our guys fought hard and we got beat because we fell behind too much and couldn't come back."
Asked how much the injuries and illness have effected his team - namely the absence of Wood - Luce said he wouldn't make excuses.
"He's a major Division I recruit, he averages almost 20 points a game, you figure it out. I don't make excuses though. These kids played the game. Warsaw made plays when they had to and we didn't."
Marion's stat packet lists Wood as its leading scorer, having scored 19 points per game in the 15 games he's played. In those games, he hit 61 three-pointers.
After his team's game at Elkhart Memorial was postponed Friday because of weather, Ogle was able to scout the Marion-New Castle game, which the Giants won by 14 points.
Ogle said he prepared his team to face Marion without Wood.
Junior Ryne Robinson led Warsaw with 24 points, while Moore chipped in with 11 points. Junior Taylor Long scored eight points, while Chase Byerly, Justin Clemens and Conrad all scored six points each.
"I'm happy for our players, we've been reeling," said Ogle. "Anytime you can beat Marion it feels good. We really had a lot of different guys who stepped up tonight."
After Mays' 31 points, 24 of which came in the second half, Marion got 12 points from JaRob McCallum and four points each from Edwards and Jackson.
The Tigers are in action again tonight at North Side Gym in Elkhart, playing Friday's rescheduled game with Memorial.
