Warsaw Boys Turn In Record-Breaking Performance

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

SYRACUSE - Warsaw boys basketball coach Doug Ogle was disappointed in his team's defense in parts of Saturday afternoon's Northern Lakes Conference opener at Wawasee.

Offensively, Ogle didn't have much to complain about, as the Tigers turned in a record-breaking performance in beating the host Warriors 112-87 in a game that was postponed Friday because of the weather.[[In-content Ad]]"I was extremely disappointed in our defense in the second and fourth quarters," said Ogle. "I thought we played unselfishly on offense the majority of the game. We created a lot of good shots and we shot the ball well, especially from distance."

Warsaw, which made good on 13 of 22 three-point attempts while the Warriors were 14 of 47 from three-point range, gave up a combined 61 points in the second and fourth quarters.

The first and third quarters were a different story, however.

Playing a Wawasee team that averaged a state-best 91 points per game, the Tigers went for the knockout punch early and led 32-8 after the first quarter.

After leading by 24, 57-33, at halftime, Warsaw used a 16-3 run to open the third quarter and take a commanding 73-36 advantage.

"I feel pretty good overall about the way we played in 2008," said Ogle. "We've got a lot left to do in 2009. We didn't take much of a step forward today in terms of defense, but we played pretty well offensively. I was extremely pleased how we played so unselfishly on offense."

With the 25-point win, Warsaw improved to 7-0 on the season, the Tigers' best start to a season since the 1995-96 campaign in which Kevin Ault led the team to the state finals.

Favored to win the NLC, the Tigers started the conference portion of their schedule the way they wanted to.

"Any time you win an NLC game on the road it's a good win," said Ogle. "This is the way we wanted to get things started."

Wawasee, which gives up an average of nearly 93 points per game, fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The 112 points is a new single-game school record for Warsaw, breaking the previous mark of 106 the Tigers scored against South Bend LaSalle in 1990.

The last time the Tigers hit the century mark in points prior to Saturday was Feb. 1, 1997, when Warsaw beat Elkhart Memorial 100-66 at North Side Gym.

Ross Stichter led Wawasee with a game high 30 points Saturday, a scoring effort that included eight three-pointers, but no other Warrior scored 15 points.

Riley Stichter finished with 14 points for Wawasee, while Keegan Beer scored 13 points and Wes Kaiser added 11 points in the loss.

Warsaw, on the other hand, had four players that scored at least 19 points.

As a team, the Tigers dished out 37 assists.

Senior Ryne Robinson, playing his first game after serving a two-game suspension for violating team rules, came off the bench Saturday to score a career-high 29 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out seven assists.

"Ryne Robinson had a very good shooting game," Ogle said of his talented senior, who finished the game 12 of 16 from the field overall and 5 of 8 from three-point range. "He had a great game. Justin Clemens, Andy Conrad and Chase Byerly also played very well."

Clemens, who just weeks ago was averaging less than six points per game, turned in his third-straight 20-point performance, finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Conrad chipped in with 20 points, while Byerly scored a career-high 19 points, a performance that included five three-pointers.

Senior Taylor Long scored eight points for Warsaw, while junior Zack Linky scored seven points and sophomore Nic Moore and freshman Lucas Grose rounded the Tigers' scoring with four points each.

Moore, who leads Warsaw in scoring this season at nearly 19 points per game, may have only scored four points, but he dished out eight assists.

And the Tigers served noticed that they have plenty of offensive weapons.

"Nic played very unselfishly said," said Ogle. "He may have only scored four points, but he dished out eight assists. We've got a lot of weapons on this team, and Ryne, Justin, Andy and Chasey, today they had big games."

The Tigers won't be in action again until Jan. 5 when they travel to Fort Wayne Canterbury.

"Now we've got some time to focus on some things in practice," said Ogle. "We're going to focus on the little things in practice and continue to improve. We've got one more warmup game (Canterbury) and then we know our next conference opponent is an excellent team."

Following the game at Canterbury, the Tigers will host conference opponent Northridge (6-0) Jan. 9 and entertain Fort Wayne South (1-3) Jan. 10.
