Warsaw Boys Track Whips Wawasee

SYRACUSE - Wawasee head coach Kerry Murphy probably understood best the difference between his Warriors boys track team and the Warsaw track team Tuesday.

"They just have too much speed on the track for us," he said. "It's tough to compete when you don't have that speed."

That speed differential was evident in the short events, the long events, the hurdles and just about everything in between as the Tigers won 14 of 16 events in winning a Northern Lakes Conference meet 103-28.

For Warsaw head coach Troy Akers, it was his first trip to Wawasee since he left the girls program to coach the boys team at Warsaw last year.

"This was a good, fun meet," Akers said. "It was fun to come back here. I don't like to hear about Warsaw against Wawasee. This is a very friendly rivalry."

Even in the field events, where some may consider Warsaw to be weak, the Tigers won all four events.

That's not to say that Wawasee didn't have its bright spots.

Chris Lambert placed second in the 300 hurdles with a time of :39.78. It was the first time he was under 40 seconds this year and just .05 seconds behind Warsaw's Jose Esquivel. Lambert also won the 110 hurdles with a time of 16 seconds flat.

In the 3200, Wawasee's Jeff Moerchen and Pete Melendez finished first and second with times of 10:09 and 10:24. And in the discus, Luke Matz had his personal-best throw.

But Warsaw had too many individuals with that speed in the other events like Esquivel, Jon Hill and David Hoffert. Along with winning that 300 hurdles event, Esquivel edged teammate Derrick Duncan for first place in the 100 and ran the first leg on the winning 400 and 1600 relay teams.

Hill won both the 200 and 400 and ran the anchor leg on the 1600 relay team, while Hoffert won the 1600 and 3200.

Akers commented on how well both his veterans and his youngsters filled their roles against Wawasee.

"I was real impressed with our freshmen and sophomores," he said. "They competed well and that goes back to the leadership of our junior and senior classes."

Akers was quick to look ahead to the next two meets that his Tigers will be in. Warsaw (4-0) will compete in the Goshen Relays on Saturday and will then have a meet at NorthWood with Concord on Tuesday that could really decide the NLC regular season championship. Concord has won the title the past two years and all three teams are much improved.

"We've had that meet in our minds for a while," Akers said. "Both NorthWood and Concord are really improved."

The Goshen Relays will begin at 9 a.m. and the meet at NorthWood will start at 5 p.m. The Warriors will also compete in the Goshen Relays before a meet at Goshen with Northridge Tuesday at 5 p.m.
