NEW CASTLE - Warsaw Community High School's boys basketball team lost in Saturday's Class 4A state championship game, but it is already being recognized as one of the top teams in the state for next season.

Warsaw has been invited to participate in the 34th Annual City Securities Hall of Fame Classic, played at New Castle Fieldhouse, next to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010.[[In-content Ad]]Following an 11 a.m. matchup between Class 3A champion Washington and Center Grove, Warsaw will square off against Bloomington South, the team that spent most of this season as the No. 1 team in Indiana and received national recognition as well.

The losers of the morning games will then play in the 6 p.m. consolation, followed by the championship contest.

According to Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Executive Director Chris May, the organization chooses teams to play in the Classic based on returning number of players, expected returning talent, standout talent and features a strong fan base.

Applicants must go through two or three different levels in the application process, with the hall of fame observing and filtering out teams.

May commented that the matchup between 5-9, 170-pound Warsaw point guard Nic Moore and Bloomington South's 5-9, 160-pound Darwin Davis, Jr. played a factor in bringing Warsaw into the fray.

"I'd certainly be lying if I said that wasn't a factor," May said. "That battle will be what people are looking forward to."

Davis Jr. and Moore each played for the AAU team Indiana Elite this past summer, so the two are familiar with one another.

Moore is still receiving college offers, while Davis has already committed to Xavier.

As juniors, Moore averaged 21 points and five assists, while Davis, Jr. averaged 16 points and five assists for his team which lost Jeffersonville in the regional.

Along with the headliners, Warsaw also brings back Lucas Grose (nine ppg, seven rpg) and Jordyn Coon (seven ppg, three rpg).

The tournament will be the Tigers second trip to the Classic, having won the 1994 version led by Indiana Mr. Basketball Kevin Ault, who scored 51 points in wins over Madison and top-ranked Ben Davis.

Bloomington South will be making its fifth trip to the Classic, winning it in 1998.

In the other morning matchup, Washington will feature the 6-9 Cody Zeller, who averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds as a junior, while Center Grove features point guard Jonny Marlin (14 ppg, six apg) and 6-7 forward Andy Smeathers (14 ppg).

Tickets for the tournament will be available through participating schools and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in the 2010 school year.
