Needing a win badly, as fourth-year coach Doug Ogle put it, Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team got one Tuesday night.

Led by 14-point performances from juniors Miles Plumlee and Steve Lemasters, as well as a 43-point second half, the Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 73-47 victory over visiting Fort Wayne Canterbury.

"We needed a win badly," said Ogle, who earned his 50th career win as head coach of the Tigers. "This gives us something to build on as we look to Huntington North and senior night."

Warsaw, now 8-10 on the season, will play its final home game of the season Friday when it hosts the Class 4A No. 8 Vikings (15-2).

Tuesday's win was the first for the Tigers since a 15-point victory over conference foe Goshen Jan. 13 and matched the second-most decisive win in Ogle's tenure.

Warsaw beat Gary Wallace by 26 in 2003. In that same year, Warsaw beat Gary Wirt by 30, the most decisive victory in Ogle's tenure.

Tuesday's 26-point win against the Cavaliers improved the Tigers to 8-10 on the season, while Canterbury lost its fifth straight game and fell to 7-9.

Averaging just 53 points per game through 17 games, Warsaw put up 43 points in the second half against Canterbury, including 25 in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we got good contribution from a lot of players," said Ogle. "We had a pretty balanced attack. We took advantage of some situations."

The Tigers' 73 points was their highest offensive output of the year. Entering Tuesday's contest, Warsaw had scored more than 61 points just twice this season and hadn't scored more than 48 points in their last four games.

Needless to say, Tuesday's performance was just what the Tigers needed.

"When we're patient, I think we're pretty good," said Ogle. "We sometimes forced some passes, but we didn't force any shots. I feel like, overall, we did a good job taking a step forward. This is big for our confidence."

Warsaw finished the game 32 of 57 (56.1 percent) from the field and outrebounded the Cavaliers 38-28. The Tigers tallied 19 assists and made 11 steals.

Canterbury was 14 of 48 (29.2 percent) from the field overall, 3 of 15 from three-point range, and 16 of 21 from the free throw line.

Ogle changed his starting lineup for Tuesday's game, putting senior John-Wesley Maierle on the floor with juniors Ben Truman, Miles Plumlee and Lemasters and freshman Mason Plumlee.

Ogle said he planned on starting the 6-foot-7 freshman, who went up for a dunk in the second half, but put Truman and Miles Plumlee in the starting lineup because senior starters Colin Clemens and Shaun Cabrera were late to a team meeting.

The older Plumlee, also listed in the roster at 6-7, made the most of his opportunity.

He finished the game 7 of 10 from the field, matching Lemasters with a team-high 14 points. He also had five rebounds and three blocked shots.

The junior, who was 5-11 as a freshman two years ago and 6-5 as a sophomore last year, scored eight points in the third quarter, making all four shots he took.

"The strength of his game right now is his shooting ability," Ogle said of Miles Plumlee. "He did a good job tonight."

Lemasters scored his 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Tommy Reinholt and Cabrera scored eight points each, while Clemens scored seven points and Mitch Reinholt and Mason Plumlee scored six points.

Eric Blanton and Jordan Fuller scored four points each, while Maierle rounded out the Warsaw scoring with two points.

All 11 varsity players got minutes Tuesday, with 10 of them breaking into the scoring column.

Lemasters and Mitch Reinholt pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while Miles Plumlee and Clemens grabbed five boards each. Cabrera tallied five assists and four steals.

Joe Mutton led Canterbury with 15 points, while Mike McRae, Beau Sorg and Chris Squires scored seven points each.

The two teams were knotted at 10-all in the first quarter, but the Tigers used a 12-0 run to pull away from the Cavaliers.

Warsaw led 30-19 at halftime and 48-34 after three quarters of play and then put together a 16-4 run in the fourth quarter en route to the 26-point win.
