Warsaw Boys Overcome Shooting Woes

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

ELKHART – The idea that it’s better to win ugly than lose pretty, surely that’s how Warsaw boys basketball coach Doug Ogle felt Thursday night.
Because despite shooting only 39 percent from the field – just 25 percent in the first half – and getting a mere six points from senior standout Jared Bloom, the Tigers beat the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers 47-45 at historic North Side Gym Tuesday night.
It was a night of opposites, in a way, as Central shot 61 percent for the game, but lost for the seventh-straight time, while Warsaw won its fifth-straight despite its shooting woes.
“This is a huge step forward for us,” said Ogle, whose team has won three games in five days, all by two-point margins. “To win this game with how our best player struggled shooting shows we’re getting tougher and we’re getting stronger mentally. This is a win our guys can be proud of.”
And a loss the Blue Blazers are without a doubt disappointed with.
Warsaw improved to 8-4, while Central fell to 2-7.
In all seven of those losses, the Blue Blazers have led in the fourth quarter.
Those seven losses have come by a combined 23 points.
“I think Elkhart Central is on the cusp of putting it together,” said Ogle.
Tuesday’s game featured 13 lead changes – six in the final five minutes – and three ties.
Central led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and 25-22 at halftime.
The score was knotted at 33-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
With his team trailing 46-43 with 35 seconds remaining, Central junior Tre Taylor converted a pair of free throws to cut the Tigers’ lead to one.
With 10 seconds left, Warsaw junior Darren Walcott went for a steal and tied up Central senior ball-handler Terrell Street.
The alternating possession arrow pointed the Tigers’ way, and two seconds later Bloom hit 1 of 2 free throws, accounting for the final score.
The hosts had a shot at a win, but after a timeout with two seconds left, senior Blake Brouwer’s three-point attempt from the top of the key was off the mark.
“I thought (John) Swanson was huge late in the game, and Darren Walcott’s defense was a big key,” said Ogle.
Swanson finished with 14 points and six rebounds for the Tigers, while Rashaan Jackson came off the bench to score 12 points and pull down four rebounds.
Junior Jordan Stookey finished with nine points and nine assists.
“Jordan had a strong all-around game,” said Ogle.
Bloom, who hit the game-winning shot in the closing seconds both Friday against Northridge and Saturday at Fort Wayne Snider, scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter.
Though he struggled through a 2-of-10 effort from the field, the senior was big on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds.
In all, Warsaw out-rebounded the Blue Blazers 33-16.
The Tigers’ effort on the boards as of late may have something to do with a trio of losses early in the season, as well as a 49-47 loss at Triton, where Warsaw was dominated on the glass.
“Those first three losses, and the loss to Triton, where they out-rebounded us and out-competed us, forced us to really take a hard look at ourselves,” said Ogle. “We have a lot of high-character guys. We’re competing a lot better now.”
The Tigers will try to extend their win streak Friday in a Northern Lakes Conference game at Goshen.
Concord, NorthWood and Warsaw all sit atop the NLC standings at 2-0.
Street led Central with 12 points, while John Stahl added 10.
Brouwer and Jaron Walters scored nine and eight points, respectively, for the Blue Blazers.
