Warsaw Boys Keep Wawasee Winless
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
SYRACUSE - It was a pretty mundane win for the Warsaw Tigers boys tennis team Tuesday afternoon when they traveled to Wawasee High School to take on the winless Warriors, picking up a 5-0 win in Northern Lakes Conference action.
The one exception was a three-set thriller in No. 1 doubles action as Wawasee's Andrew Custer and Ryan Harkleroad took the Tigers' Jason Ummel and Deon Shafer to three sets before falling 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.
Warsaw's Ben Voorhorst had little trouble with Justin McDowell in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Jason Sells, who Warsaw head coach Rick Orban describes as a "bulldog who hates to lose", got up on Ryan Edgington and refused to let up in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
A much improved Tiger No. 2 doubles tandem of Ben Kawsky and Mark Krizmanich was solid in its 6-0, 6-1 win over the Warriors' Tyler Wear and Vince Baumgartner.
Warsaw Mike Chanthalangsy jumped up out to a 3-0 lead over Josh Bohnstedt in the first set of his 6-4, 6-0 win. Bohnstedt hung tough and trailed 5-4 before Chanthalngsy pulled away for the win in the second to last match of the evening.
"He's a fun kid," said Orban of Chanthalangsy. "His play was good. He got up 3-0 then all of a sudden it was 5-4. I think his engery level went down and stopped concentrating. But to his credit he got back and played well in the second set."
After winning the first set 6-3, Ummel and Shafer got down 5-3 in the second set but the Tigers tied things up at 5-5 after Shafer held serve and Harkleroad's serve was broken.
Harkleroad put the Warriors up 6-5 after he lifted a shot just over the racket of Ummel. Ummel held serve to force a tiebreak that Wawasee dominated to send the match to a third set.
In the decisive set, Shafer and Ummel's serve became a weapon as the duo registered several aces. Shafer had two aces during one game to put the Tigers up 4-2. The Tigers then broke Harkleroad again to move to within one game at 5-2.
Ummel got the final game started with an ace. Harkleroad had a nice return to move the game to a 15-15 tie. Another ace by Ummel brought Warsaw to 30-15. Custer then sent a ball into the net after a furious back and forth between the two tandems. At first match point, Ummel was unable to close things out as he sent a ball into the net. Another mishit by Custer gave the Tigers a match.
While the final game ended on three unforced errors, overall it was the most competitive and intense match of the evening.
"Our No. 1 doubles team has won five matches this year and they're the most experienced players we have," said first-year Wawasee head coach Paula Searfoss. "When they're on they play pretty well and I thought they played well tonight. It just would have been nice if they won."
While seniors Harkleroad and Custer have the most experience for Wawasee, Shafer and Ummel are indicitvie of this year's Tiger team.
Shafer entered his freshman season never having played doubles while senior Ummel entered into his new position after having major knee surgery in the offseason.
In fact, everyone is playing a new position this year for Warsaw.
Sells played No. 1 singles last season for former Tiger head coach Andy Lewis.
In his first year as the boys head coach after heading up the girls squad for five years, Orban said that depth is his teams top weapon.
"We don't have any superstars on this team. What we do have is seven kids who are close in talent which makes us deep," said Orban. "If I wanted to I could have challenge matches every practice and probably end up with different lineups. That's how close they are."
The Tigers, 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the NLC, are in action Thursday at home against NorthWood at 4:30 p.m.
Wawasee remains winless on the season at 0-11 overall and 0-5 in the NLC. The Warriors are in action Thursday when they face off against Elkhart Memorial.
