It's hard for the seventh-year coach, however, to imagine there being a better all-around player in the state in the class of 2011.[[In-content Ad]]"His maturity has really improved," Ogle said of the 5-foot-9 Moore, who led the Class 4A No. 9 Tigers to a 63-56 win over the visiting South Bend Clay Colonials Tuesday night. "His basketball IQ and his competitive spirit are both very strong."
Moore played through what Ogle described as a sore throat and aching body and finished the contest with 20 points, seven assists and three steals, as Warsaw won its eighth-straight game to improve to 16-1 on the season.
Senior Ryne Robinson chipped in with 14 points, four assists and three rebounds, while junior Justin Clemens added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win.
Moore, Robinson and Clemens were recently named to the All-Northern Lakes Conference team, while senior Taylor Long earned honorable mention honors.
Long only scored two points in Tuesday's seven-point win, but they were key in the Tigers expanding their lead down the stretch.
With a tick under 21 seconds remaining in the game, Long converted a pair of free throws to turn a 59-56 lead into a five-point advantage.
Clemens converted a pair of free throws with three seconds to play to account for the final score, dropping the Colonials to 14-5 on the season and avenging a 60-48 loss at Clay last season.
"Clay is very good,"said Ogle. "Their athleticism is impossible for us to simulate in practice. This is a good win for us. Clay is such an athletic team. (Brad) Cameron and (George) Jones are outstanding players."
Cameron, a 6-3 senior, led the Colonials with 22 points and six rebounds, while Jones, a 6-2 senior, chipped in with 17 points.
Warsaw led 21-17 after the first quarter, the fifth straight quarter the Tigers have scored 21 points, and Clay held a 35-33 advantage at halftime.
The Colonials scored the first two points of the third quarter to take a four-point lead, and then Warsaw's defense put the clamps on them.
The Tigers put together a 13-0 run, scoring the final 11 points of the third quarter and the first two of the fourth, to take a 46-37 lead.
"We felt like they were too athletic for us to guard man-to-man," said Ogle. "We thought going to a 2-3 zone might give us a better chance in the second half. Their transition offense is so good because they have such good speed. By switching things up, I thought we took them out of their rhythm and forced them to beat us from the outside."
The Colonials tried to beat the Tigers from the outside, but finished the game 7 of 21 from three-point range.
When Clay did hit a deep shot, however, it made things interesting.
Trailing 48-41, Jones hit a three-pointer to tighten the gap with 6:14 remaining.
Down 54-48, Cameron hit a trey to draw the Colonials closer again.
Cameron made another three with 3:36 to play that would have cut Warsaw's lead to two, 56-54, but the 6-3 Clay senior was whistled for a traveling violation and it wasn't long before the Tigers were up 58-51.
Clay scored the next five points to get within two points, but Warsaw converted five free throws in the final minute for the win.
In beating the Colonials by seven points, Warsaw outscored Clay 14-7 at the free throw line.
"I'm proud of our players," said Ogle. "I'm very proud of the way they played in the second half."
Clay was bigger and more athletic each position, but the Tigers outrebounded Clay 26-23.
"In the second half, our rebounding was much better," said Ogle. "I thought that was very important."
How athletic and talented is Clay?
Jones is going to play college basketball at Indiana Wesleyan, which is currently ranked fifth in the country in NAIA.
Andrew Adeniyi is going to play football at Indiana University.
And Daniel Smith is going to play receiver for Charlie Weis at Notre Dame.
It was the Tigers, however, that won out with unselfish team play.
Of Warsaw's 23 baskets, 16 were assisted.
Playing a talented Clay team Tuesday night, and with Class 2A No. 1 Bishop Luers coming to the Tiger Den Friday, Ogle said Saturday this week would be a lot like the sectional.
Last night he said he and the team took it a step further.
"We took it a step further," said Ogle. "I told the team that Clay is a regional level opponent. They play in a very tough sectional like we do, but Clay, without a doubt, could make it to the regional level. We were treating this game like a regional game, and with a win we advanced to the regional final to play a very good Luers team. These two games will make us better for the tournament."
