MARION -Ê"Any time you can come to Marion and win, it's a good thing," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle after his team defeated the Giants 69-59 in Marion Saturday night.
Ryan DeGeeter scored the first basket of the game, Adam Griggs followed with a free throw, and Michael Moore nailed a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead to open the game.
And the Warsaw squad never looked back.
"It was nice to get off to a good start," said Ogle.
Warsaw continued to dominate offensively through the first frame, doubling up the Giants 16-8 in the quarter.
Moore started the second quarter on the right foot for the Tigers, scoring the first basket at the 7:29 mark.
Then at the 4:34 point in the second stanza, Moore hit a three-pointer that started a 7-0 Tiger run. Moore followed his three-pointer with a steal and a basket just 15 seconds later.
Griggs followed Moore's baskets with one of his own, putting the Tigers up 26-12 with 3:54 left in the quarter.
Marion played even with Warsaw through the end of the quarter, but the Tigers held a 32-18 lead at the half.
Moore opened the second half the same way he opened the second quarter - with a basket at the 7:32 mark.
Then Marion kicked into gear. The Giants ended up outscoring the Tigers 16-14 in the third frame, but Warsaw still held a hefty 46-34 lead going into the final quarter of play.
"There was not much excitement in the gym itself," said Ogle. "We just plodded along. It seemed like we took two steps forward and one step back, especially in the second half."
William 'Hoss' Knepper opened the fourth frame by hitting two free throws, but Marion's Jerel Campbell answered with two free throws of his own.
Much of the last frame was spent at the free throw line, with Warsaw connecting on 13 of 17 shots and Marion hitting 7 of 13 charity baskets.
The Giants outscored Warsaw 25-23 in the final quarter, but the Tigers finished with a 69-59 victory.
The win, Warsaw's fifth straight, moves the Tigers' overall record to 10-5. Marion falls to 2-15.
Moore led all scorers with 17 points, while DeGeeter added 11 for the Tigers. Knepper and Wienhorst netted nine points each.
Marion saw three players score in double figures. Campbell scored 15, while Eric Banks and T.J. Jones added 12 each.
The Tigers take on Plymouth Thursday night in a Northern Lakes Conference matchup in Plymouth.
