With today's 126th running of the Kentucky Derby, horse racing kicks off the Triple Crown season.

The Warsaw Tigers baseball team kicked off its Triple Crown part of the season with an 11-0 five-inning pasting of Goshen.Ê

After Wednesday's victory over Wawasee, Warsaw coach Will Shepherd stressed the importance of the next three games: Goshen, Fort Wayne Northrop, and Plymouth.

"This weekend is important for our psyche," said an elated Shepherd. "If we continue to play hard and be mentally tough, we'll be OK."

Mentally tough was indeed what the Tigers needed in order to escape Goshen's half of the first inning.

After Tiger pitcher Adam Augustine struck out the first two batters, Goshen proceeded to load the bases based in part by a mental error by Warsaw thirdbaseman Trent Martin.

Martin hesitated whether to touch third for a force play on a grounder then threw to first too late, loading the bases.Ê Shepherd went to the mound not to talk to pitcher Augustine but to talk to his infield.

"If we can back up our pitcher, we'll get out of here unscathed," Shepherd said.

Get out of the inning unscathed is just what Augustine did by striking out pitching counterpart Brandon Hughes.

Next, the Tiger offense entered the fray, lighting the scoreboard 11 times to mercy-rule the Redskins.

The Warsaw offense took advantage of a prevailing westerly winds to record four extra-base hits highlighted by a pair of grand slams off the bats of Zach Nelson in the second and Brooks Stogsdill in the third to close out the rout.

With the wind blowing out to center, Warsaw disdained the bunt used to defeat Wawasee Wednesday to produce an overflow of runs.

"I can't ever remember even seeing two grand slams in one high school game," Shepherd said.

Warsaw was an efficient 4 for 7 with runners in scoring position to the tune of nine RBIs, a .571 batting clip. No wonder, when asked about the Tiger hitting efficiency, Shepherd said, "I'll take it."

Not to be forgotten in the grand slam barrage was the pitching performance of Augustine. Mixing an array of off-speed pitches and wicked curve balls, Augustine scattered just three hits while fanning five in going the shortened distance for his fourth win this season.Ê Augustine froze the final two Goshen hitters, catching each looking to shut out the Redskins.Ê

Augustine hasÊ little time to rest; his next assignment is leg three of the Triple Crown, Plymouth.

Is this team where you wanted them to be approaching the final month of the season, Coach Shepherd?

"Yes, it took our team a month to get in the flow of the season with our (four) basketball kids missing practices," he said. "This is the first time in a couple of years we had to deal with that (Warsaw's basketball team going deep into the tournament)."

The Tigers appear headed toward greener pastures in recent days by significantly making full use of its arsenal. Just as misery loves company, success breeds success.

With Warsaw on a roll riding consecutive conference wins, the Tigers next travel to Fort Wayne to face the always tough Northrop Bruins.

All things being equal, the Tigers will have played three games in four days in their Triple Crown part of the season.

The victory raises Warsaw's overall record to 9-5 and a sparkling 6-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
