Warriors Win Round One Against Warsaw

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By JEN GIBSON, Times-Union Sports Editor-

SYRACUSE -ÊThe girls basketball game between Wawasee and Warsaw was touted as the game to see last week.

Both the Warriors and the Tigers were undefeated.

Both teams were ranked in the top 10 in the state, Wawasee was ranked (4A) No. 4 and Warsaw was (4A) No. 6.

And the performance by both teams on the floor lived up to that billing as Wawasee topped Warsaw 61-57 in a come-from behind thriller.

"I think we laid it all on the floor," said Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst. "Both teams did. We played well, and this was a great game. All the ladies on the floor played very hard."

After taking a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play, the Warsaw squad continued to add to its lead through the second.

Jaclyn Leininger and Natalie Chabot netted four points each as the Tigers outscored the Warriors 12-8 in the second frame and took a 26-17 lead at the half.

After the halftime break, Wawasee kicked into gear.

Meagan Wallen sank a pair of free throws and Jocelyn Higginbotham netted a basket to cut Warsaw's lead back to five, 26-21.

The Tigers held a 32-26 lead at the 3:37 point of the game when Wawasee's Higginbotham and Shanna Zolman sparked the Warriors.

Higginbotham hit a layup under the basket and was fouled on the play. She missed the bonus shot, but Zolman grabbed the rebound and eventually hit another basket to cut Warsaw's lead to two, 32-30.

"We wanted to come out with some quick shots," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman. "We didn't really get on them at halftime. These kids wanted to come out and play and show they were a legitimate team. I think they were a bit too keyed."

From that point, the teams traded baskets until the end of the quarter when Zolman sank a three-pointer with 6.1 ticks left on the clock to knot the score at 41-all.

But that glory was short-lived.

Warsaw fought back in the early part of the fourth quarter. Hilary O'Connell and Michelle DeGeeter both sank two free throws to restore a four-point Tiger advantage.

But Wawasee came back again, making a 6-0 run to take a 47-45 lead, its first since late in the first quarter.

Jaclyn Leininger put the Tigers back in it, hitting two free throws and a basket to give the lead back to Warsaw, 49-47.

The Warriors and Tigers traded baskets until the 1:58 mark when Wallen and Zolman picked up back-to-back baskets to give Wawasee a 57-54 advantage.

With just 29.5 ticks left on the clock, Wawasee held a 59-57 lead and prepared to inbound the ball under the Warsaw basket. However, Warsaw forced a jump ball and regained possession under its own basket with a chance to tie the game or take the lead.

However, Wawasee forced another jump ball and took possession back.

With 8.1 second left, junior Stephanie Sorenson hit both ends of a one-and-bonus to put the Warriors up 61-57.

"If the game had ended a couple of possessions earlier, we would have won the game," said Wienhorst. "Maybe a couple positions later we would have won as well. As it was, Wawasee picked up the win. This was just a great game all around."

"At times we seemed a bit sluggish or slow of foot tonight," said Kem Zolman. "We'll have to take a look at things and evaluate before the (NLC) tournament this week."

Shanna Zolman led all scorers with 33 points on 14-of-23 shooting. In the first half, Zolman was 4 of 9 from the field. She came back in the second half to hit 11 of 14 baskets including four three-pointers.

"Shanna is not going to shoot like (the first half) for a whole game," said Kem Zolman. "For a player of her caliber, it's just a matter of time. She has take thousands of shots, she knows and as much about her shooting as anyone. Who am I to give her advice on shooting? I never reached that level. We know it's just a matter of time before she gets back in her groove."

Leininger led the Tigers with 17 points, while Janna Knisely added 13 points for Warsaw. Wawasee (10-0 overall, 2-0 NLC) moves on to host NorthWood Tuesday the Northern Lakes Conference Tourney, while Warsaw (8-1 overall, 1-1 NLC) hosts Northridge.

Tigers Boys Steamroll Elkhart Central

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

Like a snowball rolling down a mountainside, Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team continues to pick up momentum.

Just as snow showed up for the first time Friday, so did the Tigers' three-point shooting Saturday in a 78-43 drubbing of Elkhart Central.

Trailing the visiting Blue Blazers 16-14 after the first quarter of play, Warsaw opened the second stanza with four consecutive three-pointers - one each from senior twins Chris and Greg Clay and two from junior Ryan DeGeeter - to take a 10-point lead.

The Tigers shot 6 of 8 from the arc in the first half and finished the game 8 of 13. Warsaw improves to 6-1, while the Blue Blazers fall to 4-2.

"I thought we shot a lot better outside than we had," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said. "The three-point shot hadn't really showed up, tonight it did. I still think it has to go back to defense, though. Our half-court defense was excellent. It really put us on a mental roll."

Warsaw complimented its hot-handed offense with a stingy defense, outscoring the Blue Blazers 18-2 in the second quarter to take a 32-18 lead at halftime.

Winning its sixth straight game, Warsaw clearly played its best basketball of the year.

The Tigers finished with five-double figure scorers, something Rhodes says hasn't happened in some time, and shot a blistering 34 of 51 (66.7 percent) from the field.

Chris Clay led Warsaw with 15 points, while brother Greg chipped in with 14. Junior Erik Fussle came off the bench and scored 13 points, while starters Brad Seiss scored 11 and DeGeeter 10.

"Fussle had a very strong performance and continues to get stronger," Rhodes said. "Our passing was very sharp. I thought Seiss did a great job of getting the ball to the attack points."

To go with his season-high 11 points, Seiss also tallied six assists and four steals.

Senior Jerad Shaw scored five in the win, while Davin Scott and William Knepper scored four each.

Just as he provided an energetic style of play in Friday's win over rival Wawasee, the 6-foot-3, 280-pound Knepper did Saturday as well, getting much applause from the crowd when he hit a circus-like lay up.

Rhodes said his gameplan coming in was to keep track of senior Cameron Macon, whom he thought was Central's best three-point shooter - the Tigers did just that.

Macon scored just seven points and was 1 of 5 from the arc. As a team, the Blue Blazers were a dismal 3 of 19 from the arc.

Senior guard Brad Pompey led Central with 16 points, while freshman center Derek Drews added 10 and junior guard Jerimy Robinson eight.

The Tigers led 55-31 after three quarters of play and outscored Central 23-12 in the fourth for the 35-point win.

"The last three quarters our defense was great," Rhodes said. "I was pleased we were able to change from one game to the next so quickly."

Warsaw hosts Northridge Tuesday in the first round of the Lake City Bank/Northern Lakes Conference Tournament. The girls will play at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 8 p.m.

Valley Girls Get The Job Done At Home

By Dan Riordan, Times-Union Sports Correspondent

AKRON- On Friday night the Valley boys team rolled into South Whitley with a 5-1 record and left with its second loss of the season.

On Saturday night it was the ladies' turn to take the court. This time it was the Vikings who played the roll of ungracious hosts.

A young, talented Whitko team kept things close in the first half. The wheels fell off as Valley turned up the heat on defense and the Wildcats struggled from the floor posting only nine second half points en route to a 63-34 loss.

Valley struck first as it jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Whitko kept its composure as Teri Walter found Christa Badskey on two straight Wildcat possessions.

Later in the quarter it looked as if Valley was the one who lost its composure, turning the ball over on three straight possessions.

In spite of those miscues, the Vikings mounted a 7-0 run with their second team finishing out the quarter.

Undaunted, the Wildcats answered with a 7-0 run of their own to leave them down 19-16 going into the second quarter.

Whitko drew to within one to start the second as Jennifer Wendel connected on a jumper. Unhappy with what he was seeing, Valley coach Gary Teel called a timeout with 6:33 left in the half.

"Mike Sands' Whitko team does a good job. They moved the ball well and made those open shots from the field." Teel said. "We knew we had to make some defensive adjustments. We had to get out on those shooters and also get in their passing lanes."

After the timeout, the Vikings went on a 13-2 run to pad their lead at 12.

Whitko scored again with 2:25 left in the half and played Valley even going into the locker room.

However, the damage was already done. The Vikings built off their second-quarter momentum as they scored the first six points of the second half. A three-pointer by Walter gave the Wildcats their first points of the half.

Points were at a premium for Whitko as it struggled from the field for the entire half. On the defensive side of the ball, the Vikings used a three-quarter-court press and tight man-to-man defense to disrupt the timing and rhythm of Whitko's offense.

Five third quarter turnovers by the Wildcats led to Valley scoring opportunities and the their lead swelled from 12 to 17 points going into the final quarter.

Whitko's woes from the field continued in the fourth as it went scoreless for the first 6:19 of the quarter. Valley was on cruise control as it kept a steady offensive rhythm for four quarters.

Junior Holly Green was Valley's X factor off the bench scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

Valley's bench play and increased intensity on defense as the game progressed proved to be way too much in the end as they rolled to a 63-34 win.
