SYRACUSE - It was a perfect day for golf, and not even last week's rain that left Maxwelton Golf Course a little soggy Tuesday could dampen Wawasee's spirits as it picked up Northern Lakes Conference wins against Warsaw and NorthWood.

Behind Taylor Goshert's and Kayla Brown's 43, the low scores of the day along with NorthWood's Amy Thompson, Wawasee shot a 187 on the par-36 course.[[In-content Ad]]The Warsaw Tigers narrowly escaped with a 205-206 win over NorthWood.

"We're averaging about 183, roughly, and we shot a 187 tonight," Wawasee coach Scott DeHart said. "But when you look at the course conditions, the last hole was in great shape, but with all the rain they had last week, it played a little tougher than normally."

The Warriors improved their overall record to 8-2 and 3-1 in the NLC, thanks to the girls coming through for one another. Playing No. 3, Brown's 43 helped balance out some higher scores.

"We have some individuals who may need to step it up a little bit, but they didn't play badly," DeHart said. "We won't play our best golf until a couple weeks from now. That's when we'll play our best."

For now, a 205 isn't what Warsaw coach Bob Turner likes to see, as most of his team's struggles come in the short game.

"It's been a problem all year, and it just seems to be a constant issue," he said about his girls' game when they get onto the greens. "We had too many three-putts, and a few four-putts. We're playing golf courses that have fast greens, and uphill greens, so we're not having consistency with our putting. If we could get our putting and chipping under control, I think we could be a 180-185 team instead of a 200-205 team."

And with a young, inexperienced team like his, Turner has learned to be patient.

"It's gonna take time," he said. "We have one or two girls who just started the game, so they're learning the game. It's just a learning process."

Warsaw's lowest score was Kylie Dishman's 47 at No. 2, but to Turner, it doesn't matter what position his girls play.

During the season, Warsaw's order has switched on a regular basis, with three different girls (Dishman, Karli Slater, Alyssa Cameron) playing the role of No. 1.

"We don't worry about positions, we just worry about playing well," Turner said. "A No. 1 or a No. 5 only has different tee times. That's my philosophy. "

For Wawasee, determining who the No. 1 will be is a no brainer with Goshert on the team.

"This is her third year playing varsity, so it is important that she fills her role as a player," DeHart said of his three-sport star. "But when you look at our our lineup, any of these girls could shoot a 43. So, I've got a good group of girls and that's what you work on. If one's not having a great day, you want the others to pick her up. That's the team aspect of it."

And as long as Goshert continues her solid play and the rest of the girls back her up, DeHart has reason to remain optimistic.

"I think these girls know what they have to do," he said. "They get up there and they get the job done. It's an experienced group."
