SYRACUSE -ÊThe Wawasee boys tennis team had a job to do Tuesday night - defeat Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen.

And the Warriors got that job done, defeating the Redskins 4-1 to get their first NLC win of the young season.

"I thought we came out focused and ready to play," said Wawasee coach Phil Mishler. "They knew what they had to do, and they came out and got the job done against a traditionally strong Goshen team."

After falling 3-2 to Fairfield in the championship game of its own invitational in searing heat Saturday afternoon, Tuesday's cooler temperatures were also an advantage for the Warrior squad.

"It was like we had new life," said Mishler. "Our legs were fresh, we were set and ready to play. I think the Labor Day weekend and the cooler weather really refreshed us."

However things did not always look bright for the Warriors. Goshen took a 1-0 lead after No. 1 singles player Mike Weaver defeated Wawasee's Scott Logan 6-0, 6-0.

Then the Warriors helped themselves out and showed their dominance through the rest of the match. No match went into a third set, and no Goshen player earned more than three games in a set as the Warriors rolled to victory.

In the No. 2 singles position, Warrior Josh Abrams tied the team score at 1-all by defeating Ashe Abebe 6-1, 6-2.

Wawasee took the first lead of the match, 2-1, when the No. 1 doubles match finished. Mickey Ashpole and Logan Pilcher joined forces to defeat Lance Yoder and Lonnie New 6-3, 6-3. But it wasn't always clear that the match would come out in Wawasee's favor. New and Yoder took an early 3-2 lead in the first set before Ashpole and Pilcher fought back to win four straight sets. In the second set, Goshen went up 1-0 before the Warrior duo kicked into gear and went up 3-2, and eventually won 6-3.

Evan Gerard solidified the win for Wawasee by defeating Alex Yoder in the No. 3 singles spot. Gerard allowed Yoder to score just three points in two games and finished the evening with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Wawasee's fourth point of the match came at the No. 2 doubles position when Seth Beer and Rosten Trobaugh paired up to defeat Jordan Sherman and Jeff McLaughlin 6-3, 6-3.

"The No. 2 doubles team did a good job for us tonight," said Mishler. "We've been lacking that fourth spot and falling short lately. They came through for us tonight to get that fourth point. I'm very happy with them."

Wawasee improves to 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in NLC play. The Warriors will play another NLC opponent Thursday when they travel to Middlebury to play Northridge.
