Warriors Take Meet -ÊAnd The Cookies
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
NORTH WEBSTER - Often in the world of sports, it's been said that certain matchups were for all the marbles. Thursday's Huntington North/Wawasee boys and girls swim meet may have been for all the cookies.
Wawasee swim coach Roger Karns made the comment that the Warriors seem to swim better against Huntington North because Karns' parents hail from Huntington and bake cookies for them each year.
Whatever the incentive, Wawasee's boys team was victorious 107-79, improving its overall season record to 2-1. Wawasee's girls team upped its record to 3-2 with a 105-81 victory.
In the girls meet, the Warriors took first-place in 7 of 12 events. What this means is that the second- and third-place finishes became that more important.
"We tried to take advantage of what we thought were opportunities," said Karns. "We wanted to see if we could score some points. We wanted to take the backstroke and breaststroke. Seven-5 is pretty close for first places."
After four swimming events the Warrior girls team led 34-27. After eight swimming events the Warrior lead only moved to 10, 68-58. But the Warriors were able to pull away in the final four events.
In the evening's last four events - 200 freestyle relay, backstroke, breaststroke, 400 freestyle relay - the Warriors took three first-place finishes, two seconds and three third-place finishes to stretch the lead.
"It's hard to pick," said Karns when asked who he thought had key performances, "other than to say all the girls stepped it up down the line."
The boys contest was much of the same. Wawasee swam to seven first-place finishes and Huntington North to five.
The Warrior boys team led 71-55 after four events. What made the difference, much like the girls meet, was that Wawasee had five second-place finishes and 10 third-place finishes.
"Winning two of three relays helped," said Karns. "We took third in all the relays, that's 6-0."
Wawasee's 200 medley relay team of Guy Simmons, Adam Brown, Rob Trame and Paul Gilliam, swam a time of 1:46.79 to take first in the 200 medley relay. Huntington North took second and the Warriors third to round out the event.

Brown, Trame and Simmons teamed up with Jared Ganshorn to take a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Again the Vikings took second and the Warriors third to round out the event.
Huntington North's lone relay victory came in the last event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay. The Vikings' team of Kris Cossairt, Jake Scheer, Ben Moritz and Jesse Cleaver swam a time of 3:34.71 to finish ahead of the field.
"They have some real strong kids," said Karns. "Scheer and Cleaver are good."
Scheer and Cleaver accounted for four of Huntington North's five first-place finishes. Cossairt took the other win for the Vikings with a time of 5:26.30 in the 500 freestyle.
"This is the boys' third meet and we've got guys swimming faster than their sectional times," said Karns.
Wawasee's girls team (3-2) will be in action again Saturday when it hosts its invitational at noon. The boys team will host its invitational Dec. 18 but will first swim at NorthWood Dec. 14.
