Warriors Take Eagles To Wire
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
COLUMBIA CITY - Opposing coaches have said it all season, Wawasee's boys basketball team is better than its record shows.
Tuesday night in a 49-47 loss at Columbia City, a team Warrior coach Phil Mishler referred to as "very sound and well-coached," Wawasee didn't play like a 4-14 team.
What Wawasee did was put themselves in to position to win the game, not completely bowing out until junior Scott Beasley's game-winning shot clanked off the rim with two seconds remaing. The Eagles got the rebound, Wawasee senior senior Andrew Packer used up his fifth foul, and six-foot junior Ian Heuer hit 1 of 2 free throws with .1 seconds on the clock to give
the Eagles the two-point win.
"I'm very pleased that we gave ourselves the opportunity to win," Mishler, in his first year with the Warriors, said. "Columbia City is a well-coached team and is sound on offense and defense. I feel real good about being there in the end."
While Wawasee falls to 4-14, the host Eagles upped their season mark to 8-9.
The two teams battled through the first quarter, with Columbia City escaping with an 11-10 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
Eagle junior Trevor Shivley opened up the second stanza with a three, but the Warriors rattled of a 10-0 run to take a 20-14 lead with 3:18 remaining in the first half.
Junior Justin VanLue scored eight points in that stretch for the Warriors and finished the game with a team-high 14 points, including a 4-of-7 performance beyond the arc.
"We know he can spot up and shoot," Mishler said of VanLue. "If he gets an open look, he can spot up and knock it down, and that opens things up for Andrew (Packer). Teams have figured out that how Andrew plays is how we play."
Packer, Wawasee's 6-foot-3 senior center, finished the game with seven points, while Travis Klenke and Scott Beasley each chipped in with 11.
Responding to Wawasee's run, Columbia City came back and trailed by four, 25-21, at halftime.
Wawasee opened the third with a three from VanLue, upping their lead to seven, 28-21. The Warriors' seven-point lead ended up being the largest lead of the game by either team.
Wawasee had Columbia City on its heels, but the Warriors couldn't provide the knockout punch.
"As a team, as a program, we haven't been in enough of those situations to finish the game," Mishler said. "We haven't had enough leads. The more of those situations we're in, the better off we'll be. What we're gonna look at is gaining experience."
Jon Pettigrew, Bob Dye, Tim Schmitt and Shively each scored two points in a Columbia City 8-0 run that gave the Eagles a 36-33 lead with 1:41 remaining in the third. A pair of baskets by Beasley gave Wawasee a 37-36 advantage at the end of three.
With the Warriors trailing 46-45, Packer missed a layup, but a foul three seconds later had Klenke at the line, where he sank two free throws to give Wawasee a one-point lead.
Columbia City committed a costly turnover with 30 seconds left but then stole Wawasee's inbounds pass. Heuer scored on a rebound basket with 11 seconds remaining, giving Columbia City a 48-47 lead and setting up the finish.
Shively led all scorers with 20, while Pettigrew added 16 and Schmitt six.
Wawasee will be in action Friday at county rival Tippecanoe Valley.
