Friday's 26th annual Max Truex Invitational had a little bit of everything.

[[In-content Ad]]The event, held at the Tigers Athletic Complex on the campus of Warsaw Community High School, saw a 20-year old record fall, two rivals battle for second place and a host of great individual performances in the event that focuses on the team concept.

Homestead came into Warsaw Friday evening and left with the first-place finish after scoring 114 points to Wawasee's 105. Warsaw finsihed third with 101.5. Triton finished sixth in the eight-team field with a score of 60.

In the Max Truex Invitational, athletes compete individually like a regularly scored track meet. Two individuals or relay teams from each school compete in each event, however, and the two times, heights or distances from each team are added together to determine the winner in each event.

The biggest buzz came from the high jump area where Fort Wayne North Side's Tyronne McKinney broke a record that stood for 20 years.

McKinney cleared 6-11.25 on his first attempt and was mobbed by teammates. The jump broke the former best of 6-10 set by Goshen's Roger Conant in 1987.

McKinney earned the oustanding individual perfomer in field events for his efforts.

Warsaw's Chas Simpson finished first in the 100 with a time of :11.54 and earned the sprinter award.

Simpson's teammate, Matt Campbell, finished first in the 1,600 with a time of 4:38.48 to earn the distance award.

Warsaw had a chance to finish second in the event as it came down to the final event, the 1,600 relay.

Warsaw and Wawasee were neck and neck in the first heat of the event, with the Warriors pulling away at the end. The Warriors had less trouble in the second heat to secure a second-place finish.

"This is one of the top meets in the state," said Warsaw assistant coach David Hoffert. "We are a big-meet type of team this year and in every area we competed really well tonight."

Warsaw shined in the field events with wins in the shot put and discus.

Sha Stuart finished first in the shot put with a put of 53-11.5 while teammate Leonard Wells finished second with a put of 52-7.5.

Wells won the discus with a throw of 152-4.5 and has yet to be beaten this year.

"We probably jinxed him by bringing that up," joked Warsaw coach David Bailey. "Leonard has really developed this year. Last year the shot put was his thing but he has really worked hard."

"Sha had some big goals coming into this year," said Bailey of Stuart. "He wanted to be a state champion and the Warsaw record holder in the shot put and he's really put the work in. I'm proud of (Stuart and Wells) effort this year."

Wawasee earned wins in the 3,200 relay, with Joe Leach in the long jump, Eric Brown in the 400, Ryan McDonald in the 300 hurdles and Ross Stichter in the 3,200.

The event is named for Max Truex, a 1954 WCHS graduate. Truex went on to the University of Southern California and ran for the 1956 U.S. Olympic Team.

Truex finished sixth in the 10,000-meter event in the 1960 Olympics and was the highest-placing American in the event since 1912. Truex went on to become a lawyer for Los Angeles County and died March, 24, 1991 at the age of 55.

Truex was Warsaw's first Olympian.

Warsaw and Wawasee are in action Tuesday for the Northern Lakes Conference meet at Concord High School.
