INDIANAPOLIS - His head newly shorn like the swimmers he coached, Wawasee swim coach Roger Karns sat on a set of metal bleachers next to the practice/warm-up pool at the IUPUI Natatorium Saturday afternoon.

Waiting.

All his swimmers had finished their contests, and he was waiting to find out where his Warriors finished in the overall team competition.

"I know we are somewhere between 10th and 15th," said Karns, "but we won't know until this race is finished."

So he went from waiting to watching as the 400 freestyle relay began and a lightning-fast race followed.

Then he went back to waiting, this time for the team results to be anounced.

When the announcement was finally made, Karns and his Warriors learned they had earned the 10th-place spot in the state wih 82 total points.

"We went from scoring two points last year to scoring 82 points this year," said Karns. "I think our seniors were disappointed after last year's state meet and wanted to do better this year. (Guy) Simmons and (Nik) Conley were determined to do better, and they really led by example this season."

Simmons and Conley joined forces in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relays, and they both competed in the 50 freestyle consolation finals.

The 200 medley relay of Simmons, Conley, Tyler Karns and Jordan Rantz advanced to the finals of the state meet and swam a time of 1:39.69 to place eighth in the event.

Conley, Simmons and Rantz were joined by Brook Singrey in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet placed fifth overall with a time of 1:28.48.

In the 50 freestyle, Simmons and Conley both advanced to the consolation finals. Then they finshed the race with identical 21.91 times to tie for 11th place overall.

"Conley and Simmons tied in the 50 free," said Karns. "I have never seen teammates tie in the state meet before."

Conley also competed in the consolation round of the 100 freestyle, where he placed 12th overall with a time of 48.08.

Simmons advanced to the championship round of the 100 backstroke. He finished the race in 53.29 to place seventh.

Warsaw's Michael Thallemer also competed in the 100-yard backstroke race. He competed in the consolation round and finished with a time of 55.42 to place 15th in the event.

Warsaw's Nate Taylor and Wawasee's Rantz found themselves in the consolation round of the 100 breaststroke, and they finished the race just 0.08 seconds apart. Taylor finished 12th with a time of 1:00.93, edging Rantz's 13th-place time of 1:01.01.

"Jordan Rantz borke a school record in the breaststroke," said Karns. "We had some really strong swims in this meet."

"This was a good finish to a good season," said Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman. "I thought our guys swam well. We had a good group of guys get down here, and we were glad to advance some guys to the finals."
