PERU - Bring on South Bend St. Joseph's.

With a 47-26 win Saturday night over Fort Wayne Concordia, Wawasee won its first regional championship since 1985 and just the third in school history.

The Warriors advanced to Saturday's northern semistate at Elkhart's North Side Gym to take on the 23-2 Indians, who finished No. 1 in the final Class 3A poll.

Eighth-ranked Wawasee earned the right to play St. Joe's with a mix of stifling defense and timely offense.

The Warriors, who didn't practice for Concordia and just studied some game film, held the Cadets to just 17 points through three quarters.

"I can't say enough about our kids," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman. "Each game we kept getting a little better. This game wasn't a perfect game but about as close as you can get."

Sophomores Taylor Goshert and Brennan McAdams led the way for Wawasee with 11 points each.[[In-content Ad]]Wawasee's three seniors, Shawn Knafel, Megan Walker and Jessie Wolf, all stepped up at different times for the Warriors.

Wolf came off the bench to score seven points and pull down five rebounds.

"Jessie Wolf stepped up huge for us," said Zolman. "I'm so proud of her. She stepped up big time."

"It's all about what the team needs," said Wolf, who went from starter to coming off the bench. "I knew my time would come to help the team."

Knafel anchored the post in Wawasee's zone defense and also finished with seven rebounds.

"What can I say about Shawn," said Zolman. "She was solid inside, getting rebounds and blocking shots."

Walker finished with just two points but had solid guard play all game.

"Those three kids have been great leaders," said Zolman of his seniors.

The Warriors held Concordia's Alissa Goeglein to just six points on the evening.

Goeglein scored 25 during the morning session in a 44-38 win over Tippecanoe Valley.

The Vikings ended another solid season under coach Gary Teel and finished with a 14-9 record and won their fifth sectional in six years.

Valley held an 11-point lead at one point during the game but Goeglein was too much.

Hannah Krueger led the way for Valley with 16 points.

Seniors Chelsy Rhoades and Rachel Sitts capped off their careers with nine points each. Fellow senior Kayla Newman played but did not score.

Wawasee advanced to the regional final against Concordia with a 50-37 win over Elwood that saw Goshert lead the way with 15 points.

"This is just the way we've been all year," said Goshert about her team's defense. "Our defense is our bread and butter."

Goshert's father Rocky is an assistant for Wawasee and the new Kosciusko County Sheriff.

So what was more exciting, winning a regional or the sheriff's race?

"Right now I'd say being a part of this team," said the elder Goshert.

The Warriors held a 27-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter then put things out of reach with an 8-0 run to start the final period sparked by two Kayln Lantz three pointers.

"We want to keep going," said Lantz as her older brother and mentor Kory, a current member of Bethel's men's team looked on. "We're ready to go to state."

Standing in the way of the Warriors is a St. Joe team that defeated Gary Roosevelt 62-44 to win their fifth straight regional crown.

The Indians and Wawasee do battle at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Oak Hill and Jimtown do battle in the 2A semistate at 1 p.m.

Tickets for Wawasee High School students, parents of players and cheerleaders, and corporation faculty go on sale Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. in the Wawasee High School Athletic Office.

Green and Gold ticket holders and season ticket holders can buy tickets Tuesday fromnoon until 4 p.m.
