Warriors Go Winless

SYRACUSE - Before Friday night's varsity basketball game between the Wawasee Warriors and the Bremen Lions, the Wawasee student section held up a sign that said "Wawasee Warriors - 0-20."
That student prediction came true when Bremen defeated the injury-plagued Warriors 60-49 on Senior Night at the hardwood teepee.
After a slow first quarter, the score stood at 8-4 in Bremen's favor. Jeremy High scored all four of Wawasee's first quarter points while pulling down five rebounds for the Warriors.
With just 20 seconds off the clock in the second stanza, Bremen extended its lead to 10-4 after Andrew Anglemeyer netted a basket for the Lions.
Andrew Packer answered Bremen's basket with one of his own to bring the Warriors back to within four points with 6:32 left to play in the first half.
After another Bremen basket, Wawasee held the Lions scoreless for five minutes as the Warriors went on a 14-0 run to take a 21-12 lead.
However, in the last 1:22, Bremen came back to tie the score at 22 with just three ticks left on the clock.
Wawasee inbounded the ball, and Chris Lambert hit a huge three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Warriors into the locker room with a 25-22 advantage.
"We went into halftime with momentum from a big basket at the end of the half," said Wawasee coach Jerry Davis.
Nate Hudson started the third frame by netting a two-point basket, but Wawasee's Josh Zolman answered with a three-pointer of his own.
Wawasee was up 29-24 with 6:40 when High collided with a Bremen player and had to leave the floor with an injury.
After High limped off the floor and into the training room, Bremen chipped away at the Warrior lead until Nate Hudson netted a two-point basket to tie the score at 31 with 4:18 left in the third quarter.
At the 3:00 mark, Wawasee had regained a four-point lead but Bremen refused to give up, and with 2:18 Jeremy High returned to the floor after spending time in the training room.
But the Warriors were running out of steam as Bremen made another run and tied the score at 37 with 1:51 left in the third.
At the end of three quarters, Bremen held a 41-39 advantage over the Warriors.
"We had a decent third quarter, but they outscored us and were able to take the lead," said Davis.
The Warriors got to within one point of the Lions early in the fourth stanza, but never overtook the lead as Bremen outscored Wawasee 19-10 in the quarter. In the end, Bremen handed Wawasee its 20th loss of the season and crushed the Warriors' visions of a senior night win.
"We had to battle fatigue in the last quarter, and we just couldn't pull it out," said Davis. "The kids came out and battled hard tonight, they played hard every minute of the game."
Zolman led the Warriors with 15 points while High added 11 points and eight rebounds of his own.
The Warriors hope to get healthy in the days before the sectional competition begins. Andrew Warner has been cleared to practice today after sitting out the last three quarters of the Columbia City game and the entire Bremen game due to a concussion. R.J. Nethaway is still questionable for the next few days, and High is expected to practice as normal today.
Wawasee finishes the regular season 0-20, and the Warriors plan to put the regular season behind them and focus on sectionals. They will look to avenge last year's sectional loss to Lakeland Tuesday in the NorthWood sectional.
"It's the same for as it is for everybody else now," said Davis. "Now every team has a one-game season."
