SYRACUSE -ÊMany people think the Wawasee girls basketball is made up of one player -ÊShanna Zolman.

The Warriors gave those people something more to think about Friday when two other players scored in double figures and Wawasee handed Elkhart Memorial its first loss of the season, 83-64.

Although Zolman led the team by scoring 29 points with 10 assists, six rebounds and five steals, Jessica Leach and Meagan Wallen added 15 points each for the Wawasee squad.

"We've been looking for others to step up and score," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman. "There's a lot of hype around Shanna because she scores a lot of points. We are starting to come along and show that others can score as well.

"It's good to have other players in double figures. That helps take some of the pressure off Shanna and helps our offense."

Wawasee jumped out to an early lead after Zolman netted five straight points in the first quarter.

However, Elkhart Memorial tied the game at seven with 5:42 left in the first stanza and took a 10-9 lead just 40 seconds later.

At the end of one quarter, the score was tied at 22.

Then the Warriors started to pull ahead. Wawasee stretched the lead to 42-32 with 3:52 left in the quarter, and a floating jumper from the free throw line by Zolman with two seconds left in the half gave the Warriors a 52-37 lead at the intermission.

Wawasee continued to add to its lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Chargers 15-10. Leach and Wallen combined for 11 of those 15 points as Elkhart Memorial held Zolman scoreless for the entire third quarter.

With 3:47 left in the final quarter, Zolman hit a jump-shot while falling and was fouled on the play. She hit the free throw, her 10th of the night, to give the Warriors a 76-51 lead.

Although the Chargers outscored the Warriors 17-16 in the final quarter of play, Wawasee won 83-64 and handed Elkhart Memorial its first loss of the season.

"We knew they were quick with a lot of athletic ability," said Zolman. "We are a very young team, but we played hard.

"I was disappointed with our defense tonight. In our first game, our defense was very good. This week it was not as strong."

Wawasee won't get much time to enjoy the victory. The Warriors, now 2-0, will travel to Fairfield tonight to face the 3-1 Falcons.
