SYRACUSE -ÊWhitko traveled to Syracuse Thursday afternoon with dreams of winning the first match of the sectional and continuing the upward momentum the Wildcats experienced.

Wawasee gave Whitko an awakening as the Warriors defeated the Wildcats 3-2 in a match that was a duel to the finish.

Wawasee jumped out to an early lead as the No. 1 doubles pair of Laura Lundin and Steph Shivers defeated Whitko's Stephanie Moore and Meghan Sautter 6-2, 6-0.

Although they were down 1-0, the Wildcats refused to let the Warriors run away with the match. Whitko's No. 2 singles player, Trisha Peters, put the Wildcats back in the running by defeating Ashley Bell 6-1, 6-1.

After Lisa Menck defeated Wawasee's Diane Jackson at the No. 3 singles spot 6-1, 6-0, Whitko had taken the lead 2-1.

Shanda Bucher and Kayla Auer teamed up for Wawasee in the No. 2 doubles position and defeated Whitko's Renee Harris and Amanda Hatton 6-4, 6-0 to tie the score at two.

The fate of both teams' seasons then rested on the outcome of the No. 1 singles match between Wildcat Alyson Frantz and Warrior Mandy Perzanowski.

Perzanowski jumped out to an early lead and took the advantage after winning the first set 6-1. She was well on her way to winning the next set when Frantz threw a wrench into the works. Perzanowski was up 3-0 when Frantz made a comeback by winning the next two volleys to make the score 3-2.

After the score reached 4-3 in Wawasee's favor, Perzanowski won another volley to go up 5-3. However, Frantz won the next two points to tie the score at five.

Perzanowski went up 6-5, but Frantz answered right back to tie the score at six. Although Frantz battled hard in the tiebreaker, Perzanowski came out on top and won the match 7-6, and Wawasee won the first round of the sectional by one point, 3-2.

"Our No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles came through for us tonight," said Wawasee coach Phil Mishler. "I think the NLC competition last weekend really helped us build the confidence we needed to play well in the sectional."

"I am happy with the way the girls played tonight," said Whitko coach Vicki Cripe. "We did well."

"We knew the Whitko girls would give us a run for our money," said Mishler. "They were finishing the season on an upbeat, but we came out ready to win."

The Warriors (5-9) will move on to play Tippecanoe Valley Saturday in the next round of the sectional.

"Valley is on a roll right now, they have won eight in a row," said Mishler. "Valley is coming into the sectional wanting to win it. Saturday is gonna be a battle because both teams really want to take this tournament."

Whitko ends the season 7-7.
