SYRACUSE - The Wawasee Warriors softball team's bats were quiet in the first inning. A Leigh Froebe strikeout and two soft groundouts by Megan Walker and Tarina Sorensen made for a ho-hum turn at the top of the Warriors' lineup to start the game.

Then came the second inning.

The Warriors more than made up for their first-inning silence with 15 runs in the second inning en route to an 18-4 win over the Triton Trojans Thursday afternoon at Wawasee High School.

Ashley Holdeman, Wawasee's cleanup hitter, batted and reached safely three times in the second inning. Holdeman got things started with a shot to deep left-center field that stayed in the park but gave Holdeman a double.

Angie Beer drove both Holdeman and Cheryl Thomas in with a single to make the score 2-0. In Thomas' second at-bat of the inning, the left fielder drove in two runs with a single that plated Holdeman and Megan Walker.

Froebe, Wawasee's starting pitcher, helped her own cause, scoring two runs in the decisive second inning.

Triton's Candace Pranger, who was on the hook for all 15 runs, battled and finally got out of the inning when she struck out Danielle Mast. Mast replaced Thomas in the lineup after Thomas' second at-bat of the inning.

While Pranger struggled, she did manage two strikeouts and worked a perfect first inning.

Bright spots were few and far between for Triton Thursday but the Trojans did see some production from the middle of their lineup.

Freshmen Stephanie Stichter and Megan Dean both went 2 for 3 on the day and each scored a run.

Sophomore Megan Zaugg went 1 for 2 with an RBI after replacing Jennifer Sheetz in the nine spot of Triton's lineup.

While the Trojans search for the first win of 2005 and the first since the 2003 campaign, they will do so with an extremely young group. Third baseman Danielle Barker is the team's lone senior, while 12 players on Triton's roster are freshmen.

Youth isn't so much the issue for Wawasee. Numbers and a perceived lack of focus were the back stories brought into Thursday's game.

The Warriors suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of South Bend Riley Tuesday and are currently without seniors Rachel Canen and Kasey Bollier, while Wawasee is on its spring break.

Young players like sophomore Kayln Price, who played center field, were given the chance to get some playing time.

Sophomore first baseman Amber Timmons was impressive at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI.

It was a 180-degree turn from an error-laden performance against Riley, said Wawasee head coach Cory Schutz.

"I think the focus was better today. We took yesterday off to get our heads cleared and they came back a little bit today," said Schutz. "Defense is where we had to focus the most. We'd been hitting the ball great but the fielding has been bad."

The Warriors committed three first-inning errors to put Froebe in some early trouble. Wawasee and its pitcher escaped unscathed and played the rest of the game error-free in the field.

Froebe grabbed the decision and left after three innings. She allowed just one hit while striking out three.

Pranger earned the loss, but along with striking out two, walked just three batters in the loss.

The Warriors move their record to 2-5 on the season and are in action Monday against Fairfield. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Triton, 0-2, looks for its first win Monday at Tippecanoe Valley. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.
