MENTONE - Diane Warren took an official oath of office Wednesday, becoming the town's newest postmaster.

She's actually held that office since November, replacing Wanda Troke.

Mike Lamborn, a post office operational manager, Fort Wayne, conducted the ceremony before about 40 family, friends and satisfied customers.

"Can you tell I'm nervous?" Warren said, wearing a black business suit, before the official ceremony. Usually her dress is a little more casual, she said.

She's been a postal employee for 14 years, back when the price of a first class stamp was 25 cents. Warren and four other postal employees handle thousands of 46539 zip-coded pieces of mail each day for a little more than 1,000 customers.

Lamborn said 200 years ago postmasters were leaders of the community and were always officially sworn to office.

"We got away from the ceremony for awhile," he said. "It seems to us now, though, that this is a historic occasion and postmasters are still leaders of the community."

Warren said she originally wanted to invite the three former bosses she had prior to entering the postal service.

"I wanted to thank them for the work ethic they provided to me," she said in the spacious Mentone post office building.

She introduced her three children and their spouses, Craig and Rhonda, Shelly and Dan and Christopher and Amber, and grandchildren.

Someone said, "What about ...?" pointing over Warren's shoulder.

"Oh, yes, and my husband, Butch," she said, laughing, bringing him forward.

"I love all of you and want to thank you for coming to share my day." [[In-content Ad]]
