NORTH MANCHESTER - Walter E. Blocher, 85, of North Manchester, died at 2 a.m. Feb. 4, 2011, in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

He was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Minot, N.D., to Simon and Lucy Wagoner Blocher. On April 6, 1947, he married Jerra Lee Burkart, who died July 24, 2004.

He retired after 30 years as a carpenter with D&C Construction, South Whitley. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester, and a former member of North Manchester Jaycees.

Surviving are three sons, Joe (and spouse Jill) Blocher, Bristol, and Jeffry Blocher and Jan (and spouse Nancy) Blocher, all of North Manchester; a daughter, Tena (and spouse Byron) Brunn, North Manchester; five sisters: Etta Ulrey and Anna (and spouse Kenneth) Fingerle, all of North Manchester; Lydia Kinzie, Delphi; Dorothy (and spouse Lester) Bower, West Alexandria, Ohio; and Bernice Garber, West Manchester, Ohio; eight grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman and Donald Brubaker officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.

Calling is from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
