Her first co-sponsored bill to reduce government spending, H.R. 273 prevents a salary increase for the vice president, cabinet secretaries, members of Congress and federal employees issued through President Barack Obama’s executive order in December.
Walorski said the federal pay freeze legislation signals to the American people that this Congress is serious about addressing the fiscal crisis.
“With our national debt at $16.4 trillion, authorizing a pay increase for the vice president, cabinet secretaries, members of Congress and federal employees is simply unacceptable,” Walorski said. “Congress must prove to the American people that we are serious about tightening our belt to reduce spending and live with our means.”
Walorski said Hoosier families sit around their kitchen tables and make tough decisions to live within their means. Now Congress must do the same.
“If Washington starts to responsibly manage the federal budget, we can improve the economy and put more money in the pockets of Hoosier families,” Walorski said.
Walorski said Hoosier families consider keeping a budget a basic requirement, and the president should not be adding to the burdensome deficit on the backs of children to benefit elected officials.
If enacted, the proposed legislation could save an estimated $11 billion in spending over the next 10 years.
Earlier this week, Majority Leader Eric Cantor announced that the House of Representatives will consider the bill. A specific date has not been scheduled at this time.[[In-content Ad]]
