He and co-owner Steve Shaffner sought the opportunity to secure the theater's place in the community by entering into an agreement with the non-profit Wagon Wheel Theatre Foundation. However, the foundation has only been able to raise in upwards of $100,000 to date, according to the foundation's press release Thursday.

The foundation's press release also stated The Wagon Wheel Theatre Foundation changed its corporate name to Roy Hine Performing Arts Foundation Inc.

"Negotiations were ended because of an impasse in reaching financial terms with the current owners," according to the foundation's press release.

The Shaffners and the Wagon Wheel Theatre Foundation had been working together since 2006, according to the theater's press release. Bruce Shaffner said that he was informed of the foundation's decision to suspend negotiations on Nov. 6. In light of this, he said, "The notion that negotiations stalled because of a financial impasse is unfortunate."

He said Hine, the theater's late artistic director, would have been honored by the foundation's decision to rename the corporation after him.

"Roy, in addition to being the theater's director, was a close personal friend of mine," Bruce Shaffner said. "We shared the dream of converting the theater into a non-profit organization because we knew how important it is to the community."

He said that he and Steve would continue opportunities for non-profit status, with the goal of increasing public interest and awareness of the performing arts.

For the present, Shaffner said the theater would direct its attention on the upcoming concert series and holiday production of "A Christmas Carol." In addition to the Roy Hine Musical Tribute Dec. 14, upcoming concerts including Spike and the Bulldogs on Dec. 31; Collin Raye, Feb. 14; and Sawyer Brown, April 18. In addition, the 2009 summer season has been announced and is set to begin June 10.
