BOURBON - Elementary school social worker Josh Van Houten presented the Triton School Board Monday with a photo slide show and description of his daily activities.

Van Houten's goals are to be visible and accessible to students. He has developed a rapport with the elementary children, as well as the teachers and staff.

Van Houten joined the Triton School Corp. after being employed at the Bowen Center for the past three years. He holds a degree in social work, and a minor in criminal justice.[[In-content Ad]]Van Houten works closely with the parents and students to be pro-active in their lives before potential behavioral problems arise. Van Houten also works with an array of community agencies to assist the children in being the best that they can be, and to overcome difficulties in their home lives and academics.

Elementary Principal Rebecca Dennis told the board, "Josh is a great addition to our school. We appreciate his expertise in all facets. He has gone far beyond our expectations, and we are truly delighted to have him here."

The board accepted the hiring of Wes Rettinger as the fifth-grade boys basketball coach, replacing Jim Shively, who moved to coach sixth grade.

Superintendent Ted Chittum presented the class of 2007 graduate follow-up study. In summary, 66 percent of the class of 2007 are pursuing further training beyond high school at a college, vocational school or military while 25 percent are working, 6 percent are unemployed, 1.5 percent are homemakers, and 1.5 percent are unknown. Averages of the preceding five classes from 2002-2006 are the following: further education, 70.5 percent; working, 25 percent; unemployed, 4.5 percent; 0 percent, homemakers; and 0 percent, unknown.

Grandparents' Day was successful in both schools. Mike Chobonov reported they cooked 600 burger and brats at the junior and high school. Dennis reported there were 415 grandparents at the elementary school.

The board approved Christina Cordell's request for the seventh-grade ski trip scheduled for Jan. 29. The class is planning on going to Swiss Valley Ski Resort in Michigan, weather permitting.
