AKRON - Virgil U. "Butch" Bahney, 70, of 12244 E. CR 225S, Akron, was born at 5:15 a.m. June 12, 2009, at Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

He was born Nov. 16, 1938, in Akron, to Urban S. and Nellie E. Dillsaver Bahney. On June 3, 1962, at the Akron Church of God, he married Reta Y. Hopkins, who survives.

A 1956 graduate of Gilead High School, he served in the U.S. Marines. He retired in 2000 from Square D, Peru, where he worked in the maintenance department. Prior to his employment with Square D and serving in the Marines, he worked as a welder. He was a member of Moose Lodge 249, Peru.

Also surviving are a son, Paul Bahney, Rochester; two daughters, Denise Messer (and friend Gene Slone), Warsaw, and Lisa Bahney (and partner Dessen Rink), Goshen; a sister, Bonnie "Collene" Miller, Gilead; two brothers, Marvin (and spouse Carol) Bahney, Akron, and John (and spouse Barb) Bahney, Macy; and five grandchildren: Ashley Bahney; Logan and Jerrica Messer; and Dustin and Bailey Rink. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Bobbie Bahney, who died Nov. 8, 1997.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester, Akron. Burial with graveside military rites will be at Akron Cemetery.

Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
