AKRON -ÊThe Tippecanoe Valley Vikings endured a long junior varsity game, a sweltering gym and early foul trouble to defeat North Miami 74-49 Saturday.

Although the Vikings came out on top, varsity coach Bill Patrick was not pleased with his team's less-than-spectacular play.

"We took a step back tonight," said Patrick. "We played pretty well in our first two games, but you couldn't tell that out there tonight.

"We missed layups. We didn't block out well. We were not aggressive. We won't get better playing this way."

Valley struck first when Brandon Eaton connected with Justin Ross for a basket to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead with 7:39 still left in the first quarter.

But with 6:00 left in the first Valley had already been called for three team fouls, and by the end of the quarter the Vikings had nine team fouls. However, the fouls did not make much difference in the quarter as Valley outscored the Warriors 19-10 to take a healthy lead into the second quarter.

Valley extended its lead to 27-13 after Trey Eaton passed the ball to Dax Snyder under the basket with 5:21 left in the first half.

The Vikings reduced the number of fouls in the second half, committing only one, but the final foul put them in the double bonus for the last few minutes of the second quarter.

Despite the fouls, Valley continued to extend its lead. After outscoring North Miami 17-10 in the second quarter, the Vikings took a 36-20 lead into the lockers at the half.

The third quarter was much like the two before as Valley continued to add to its lead, outscoring North Miami 12-7.

The fourth quarter could have been called Foulfest as the teams combined for 20 fouls. North Miami's Joe Deardorf fouled out early in the fourth quarter while Valley's Brandon Eaton fouled out with 3:29 left in the game.

Even without their leading scorer, Valley still managed to put more points on the board than North Miami in the final quarter of play. The Vikings scored 26 points to the Warriors' 22.

"This was our first weekend to play back-to-back games," said Patrick. "Last night was away, the guys were tired and the gym was hot. But that is not a good reason to play the way we did.

"Our goal is to get better every game. We didn't do that tonight. I guess the bright spot was that we got a lot of kids in to play. It was nice to get some kids involved that don't normally get to play. Wes Yarian got in and scored a basket, so that was a good experience for him."

The Vikings, now 2-1, will travel to South Whitley where they will face the Whitko Wildcats Friday. The JV game is scheduled for a 6:15 p.m. start.
