AKRON -ÊThe boys basketball teams from Tippecanoe Valley and Triton must have been listening the the 1980s Olivia Newton-John tune "Physical" before Friday night's game in Akron.

The rough and tumble game went to Valley 79-62, but not before 40 fouls were called and two players fouled out of the game.

But neither coach was complaining about the physical nature of the game.

"Not too many teams that we play will give us a physical game like this," said Triton coach Mike McBride. "We tend to struggle with physical teams, we've been that way all year. This game will help prepare us for the sectional."

Not only was the game physical, it was heavy on the offense as well. The fast-paced game led to many scoring opportunities early.

The Vikings got on the board first as Valley sophomore David Lash netted the first basket of the game.

And then the race was on.

The teams traded baskets for the entire first quarter, with neither squad going up by more than four points.

At the 2:35 mark, Trojan Cory McClarnon sank a three-pointer to put Triton up 18-14, but Valley senior Cory Vanlaningham hit two free throws to cut the differnce to two, 18-16.

Then Viking senior Jeff Parker hit back-to-back baskets in the last 1:31 to put Valley up 20-18 going into the second stanza.

Viking Shanes Denny and Drudge scored the first four points of the second frame to increase the lead to 24-18, and Valley never looked back.

Triton cut its deficit to three, 24-21, on another shot from downtown.

The Vikings slowly added to their lead through the remaining six minutes of the second and took a 37-31 advantage at the half.

Parker struck again in the third, scoring the first basket of the second half to move Valley's lead to eight, 39-31.

Brandon Garey answered for Triton, netting a deuce to make the score 39-33, but then Vanlaningham caught fire.

The 5-foot-11 Viking guard aced two straight treys to give the Vikings their biggest lead to that point, 45-33.

"Cory played well," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "He had a very good third quarter."

Trojan senior Todd Blackford netted a three in response to Vanlaningham's outburst, but Drudge quenched a Triton comeback with back-to-back baskets to make the scor 49-36.

By the end of the third frame, Valley was in control 63-50.

Stuart Jackson opened the fourth quarter with a free throw, and Blackford answered with one of his own to make the score 64-51.

After a basket by Drudge, Blackford hit a two-point and then a three-point field goal to get Triton back within 10, 66-56.

However, the Vikings refused to let the Trojans get any closer and finished strong for the 79-62 win.

"We shot the ball well," said Patrick. "I thought we got good play for all nine players tonight. And we needed all nine after getting in a bit of foul trouble and having Lash and Denny foul out."

All totaled, Valley saw four player score in double figures. Drudge led the Vikings with 22 points, while Vanlaningham added 19. Parker netted 12 points, and Lash finished the night with 10.

Triton had three players score in double figures. Blackford finished with 19, while Moore was close behind with 17. McClarnon netted 10 for the Trojans.

"I thought we forgot about Moore in the second half," said McBride. "He had a really good first half and then only scored three free throws in the second half."

The win moves Valley's record to 18-1 on the season, while Triton falls to 10-8 overall. The Vikings travel to Wawasee to finish the season Friday. Triton hosts Oregon-Davis Tuesday.
