Vikings Take Control In TRC
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON -ÊGoing into Friday night, the Manchester Squires and the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings knew what was riding on their basketball game: a share of the Three Rivers Conference.
With a Valley win, the Vikings would secure at least a share of the conference title. With a Manchester victory, the Squires still would have a chance at a portion of the title.
The Vikings squelched the Squires' slim hope of a portion of the TRC with a 55-44 win.
Manchester jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the first quarter before Valley started to make a run. Craig Kuhn, Trey Eaton and Brandon Eaton combined to score the next six points to take an 8-7 lead.
The Squires and Vikings traded baskets until the end of the quarter. After one period of play, the Vikings held a 12-11 lead.
Klay Bechtold put Manchester back in the driver's seat when he sank a three-pointer just over 30 seconds into the quarter to give Manchester a 14-12 advantage. However, just over one minute later Cody New evened the field with a basket to knot the score at 14.
Valley held a 21-19 lead with 17.2 ticks left on the clock, but Anthony Frieden hit two free throws with 3.6 seconds left in the quarter to tie the score at 21 at the half.
Again, the Vikings and Squires traded baskets in the first two minutes of the second half. With 6:15 on the third-quarter clock, Chris Lochner hit a basket that gave Manchester its last lead of the game, 26-25.
Valley went on to outscore the Squires 13-4 in the last 5:28 of the third frame to take a 38-32 lead into the final quarter of play.
"I think the third quarter was the key to the game," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "We came out and did things well. Our guards played pretty well in the third.
"I think both teams were tight in the first half."
In the fourth quarter, Manchester got to within five points of Valley, but the Vikings did not allow them to get any closer.
In the end, Valley came out on top 55-44 to keep its undefeated TRC record intact.
"This was a big game," said Patrick. "Everybody else in the conference has at least one loss, so we secured part of the conference title."
New led the Vikings with 15 points and eight rebounds while Brandon Eaton added 14 points and seven rebounds.
"Cody played well tonight," said Patrick. "He'll be a pretty good player after three or four more games."
Bechtold was the only Squire in double figures with 14 points. He hit 4 of 5 three-point shots for the night.
Tippecanoe Valley, now 11-3 and 6-0 in the TRC, is on a seven- game winning streak. The Vikings play at Wabash Friday. Manchester is now 6-8 and 4-2 in the TRC and has lost five straight games. The Squires will travel to Churubusco Friday.
"I feel really positive about our kids," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "They hung in there and played tough until the end. We'll be back, and we are going to be able to play some good teams. We did some good things tonight.
"I have to give Valley credit, they played very well."
Notes -ÊTwo leading players were out of commission in this game. Manchester's David Bazzoni was out due to illness, and Valley's Dax Snyder played only a few minutes in the first quarter. Snyder has a pulled muscle in his back and is not expected to play next weekend. According to Patrick, "I think the game may have been different if they had both been able to play."
