ROCHESTER -ÊFire alarms must have been going off all over Rochester when Tippecanoe Valley and Rochester met in a four-alarm overtime barn burner Friday night.

Fortunately for Valley's boys basketball team, it finished hotter than the Zebras and earned a 76-74 Three Rivers Conference win.

After the Vikings (9-2, 3-0 TRC) and Zebras (3-6, 1-2 TRC) played to a 64-64 stalemate in regulation, Josh Lett capitalized on a steal by B.J. Swank, and then Nick Patterson hit a basket to put the Zebras up by four, 68-64, making Valley fans more than a little nervous.

However, one slick play by Cody New erased that lead and put the fans at ease. New hit a three-point basket and was fouled with 2:13 left in the overtime period. After New sank the free throw, the score was knotted at 68-68.

With 1:41 left in overtime, Drew Shafer stole the ball from a Rochester player and passed it to New, who was fouled. Since both teams were in a double-bonus situation, New stepped to the line to shoot two foul shots. He hit both, giving Valley its first lead since the 1:11 mark in the fourth quarter.

Patterson had a chance to tie the score at 70 with 47.7 seconds left, but he hit only 1 of 2 free throws and left Valley with a slim 70-69 advantage.

Anthony Domenico hit two bonus free throws, and Ross Stutzman hit the first of his two bonus shots to give Valley a 73-69 lead with 34.1 seconds left in the extra period.

At the 15.7 second mark, Kyle Surface hit a basket to put the Zebras within two, but Trey Eaton hit two, and Domenico hit one bonus free throw to build a five-point Viking lead.

Rochester's Bill Newton hit a three-pointer with less than one second remaining making the final score 76-74 in Valley's favor.

"This is one of those games where you feel fortunate to get the win, get out of the gym and go on to the next game," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "We did some nice things, but we did some things to hurt ourselves as well."

However, things did not always look bright for the Vikings. Rochester built a 10-3 lead in the first quarter before Valley went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to one, 12-11.

"Our kids were not mentally ready to play to start the game," said Patrick. "I think they looked at that 30-point win in the tournament and thought this would be easy. They didn't listen when I told them this was going to be a hard-fought game."

Then Valley outscored Rochester 16-4 in the first 5:30 of the second quarter to build an 11-point lead. But by halftime, that lead had dwindled to four, 31-27.

"We were in a position to lose a couple times," said Patrick, "but we were also in a position to win but we couldn't put it away. We were up by 11 and couldn't put the game away."

Like the first quarter, Rochester left the halftime break ready to play. Patterson and Swank scored the first two baskets of the third frame to tie the score at 31-all. Another basket by Patterson at the 6:42 mark gave the Zebras their first lead since the first quarter.

The Zebras continued to pour it on through the third quarter, outscoring Valley 25-15 to take a 52-46 advantage into the final quarter of regulation.

"At one point we were down by six," said Patrick. "The kids played with a lot of heart. They battled back a couple of times when they could have folded. They fought hard."

But the Vikings refused to give in. Eaton, New and Domenico scored the first six points of the final stanza to tie the score at 52.

Then Valley and Rochester played cat-and-mouse for the rest of the game, practically matching basket for basket.

At the 1:11 mark, Domenico hit both ends on a one-and-one opportunity to give Valley a 64-61 lead, but Patterson hit a basket and was fouled at the 48.7 mark. After his free throw sailed through the net, the score was tied at 64-all, where it remained until the overtime period.

New and Eaton both recorded double-doubles for the Viking squad. New pulled down 10 rebounds and netted 29 points on a 9-of-16 performance, including 2 of 4 three-pointers. Eaton finished the game with 17 rebounds and 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting and a perfect 10-of-10 performance at the charity stripe.

"Trey had a bunch tonight," said Patrick. "But I think he had some extra incentive. His girlfriend goes to Rochester and I think he tried to impress her. I'm sure it didn't hurt."

Domenico, who missed two days of school and only attended two practices this week due to illness, pitched in nine points, including seven free throws, for the Vikings.

"Anthony has been sick all week," said Patrick. "He wasn't in school Tuesday or Wednesday. He was only at two practices all week. I think we wore him out. We probably shouldn't have played him as much as we did."

Patterson led the Zebras with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, while Newton added 20 points and Surface chipped in 16.

"Rochester played very well," said Patrick. "They came out ready to play. They dominated the third quarter. They sure didn't look like a 3-5 basketball team tonight."

The Vikings hope to stay hot as they travel to Caston Tuesday for a non-conference matchup and then host TRC rival Southwood on Saturday.
